Here is a thing about Orisson. I have stayed there three times but never booked once. I always went to the pilgrims office in St Jean and asked them if they would kindly book a bed for me in Orisson that night. They ring up and I have always got a bed - even when it is full online.
I think...
There are a lot of great suggestions there! I don't have much to add that has not already been mentioned. I just want to say that my favorite camino so far was a winter Frances. I loved every second of it!
Go for it!

Yes when we first met she was thinking of opening her own albergue, while learning the ropes at La Finca. A year later she was still at La Finca and had taken on the pilgrim side of things, but the owner was talking to her about becoming a partner in the business. She had not decided what to do...
I know a pilgrim who did! She visited once and stayed! Last time I was there she was running the albergue side of things and was negotiating becoming a partner in the business.
First time I stayed at La Finca, 7 pilgrims stayed a second night, it was that good. One Italian walked every day but...
I sleep outside a lot on the camino, to me it is just a choice. I never camped out once when I walked in winter.
You will probably at some point get wet in winter. You will not want to be camping outside wet. You will want warm accommodation where you can get out of those wet clothes, have a...
Welcome to the forum!
I take it you mean starting in St. Jean Pied de Port?
In my view:
- Yes this is crazy (crazy can be good, but not this time)
- The weather will most likely slow you down, I am not sure this can be done at this pace, in winter.
- A good chance that at this pace an injury...
Mmmmm, the Way passes though the car park of a large strip club on the VDLP. I'm sure that more than one pilgrim has a sello from there! Not me though, I was going to ask, but I chickened out at the last moment! And have you seen the price of accommodation there? Nearly 50 Euro an hour! And no...
It is common for pilgrims walking into St.Jean (from Le Puy/Vezeley/Paris) to stop for an extra night. I am really glad I did, there is a lot to see, St. Jean is a pretty place. I recommend a picnic and a bottle wine in the Citadel at sunset.
There are also some great restaurants there. Sample...
I got bitten by a Parrot in Vilar de Mazarife. Thing is it made me jump and I banged my head off a wall and got a nasty bump and a headache. Much to the amusement of my fellow pilgrims.
I visit Coco the *****y parrot every time I pass now. And sing it bad punk songs that it really hates...
No, nothing I can think of at all.
The 'large areas of wilderness' aren't really wild or large at all. There are villages very close together all along the trail. There is one 16km stretch with nothing much, but definitely not wild.
You will be fine!

I was there in mid December once, the nearby restaurants were open.
But note that the big new albergue will be closed, so no vending machines. The winter albergue will be open though, lets say it is a bit more basic, but is warm and toasty.
The first cafe you come to in Burgette was open...
I think most of the Gites in SJPdP will let you stay two nights. (I never had a problem in the rest of France on Le Puy route).
The only one I know of where you can stay only one night is the Refuge Municipal - unless you walked there. (and which you can't book ahead anyway).
7.5Kg pack...
Hi Damien, I have walked the Frances Nov/Dec. Weather wise expect anything and dress accordingly (layers). I'm sure you know the score. I was lucky weather wise. Many foggy and cold mornings then crisp cold but bright sunshine. Sometimes even warm enough to sit outside and eat (with a coat on)...
Yep, a very tired and not funny stereotype. Something that some people don't understand is that these 'harmless' stereotypes included in this 'movie' actually impact our lives, and our pilgrimage as we walk. It is not a big deal to me either, but it is annoying and something I would rather not...
