We enfold you in the warm embrace of this community of fellow pilgrims. May you get home safely and may your memories of the Caminos you've walked together become treasures that keep him alive in your heart.
I loved the alternate route - it was one of the most solitary parts of the trip, but also such nice ambles down country roads, far from any traffic. We enjoyed our stay at Calzadilla de los Hermanillos at Via Trajana.
But then, unlike some others, we loved, loved, loved the Meseta for its...
Echo most of what's been said about the remoteness and beauty of the alternate route through Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos except that we diverted over to Religios on the 2nd day to make it shorter.
They say that once the bones of St. James call a person, they don't stop calling until you see them face to face in Santiago. I felt that calling first in 2014, and it took me until 2022 to get there.
Check out Ivar's store linked here for lots of things for inspiration. He ships to the US...
I am so happy to hear that!!! My husband and I traveled together, too and it was a peak experience for us. I was the one who wanted to go first but now he's the one who wants to go back 😁
I wrote a reflection on our experience walking together here...
You can get anything you want in Santiago. I brought home mini tiles that were refrigerator magnets to give us gifts.
Someone had given one to me when she learned I wanted to do the pilgrimage and it helped keep my dream alive.
For me personally, my stamped passport is my most treasured...
Hmm. I think the Camino would be a great introduction to European travel. Just don't expect the same spirit of camaraderie in Paris or Rome, when you make it there. But you said it was your first trip to Spain, not to Europe.
My husband and I are also slow walkers. We had no trouble walking...
At least one of the albergues in Uterga takes reservations, if you want to have plenty of time to get there. Then it’s a nice short walk to Puente la Reina which is a town worth visiting if you’re into churches.
I was able to attend just by walking in as they had started singing. I didn’t get the sense that they checked at all. Then we all walked to Mass together. It was lovely. one of my favorite memories.
We stayed at a wonderful Casa Rural in Grañon in a private room, and enjoyed soaking up the pilgrim atmosphere in the evening, then retiring to peace and quiet.
The Francés only really has some unavoidably long stages near the Meseta. Otherwise if you stay off stage, you can find lots of...
We had Tiles on our day packs and our send-forward bags but never needed to use the app to find them. I mainly used the app to find my phone before going out to dinner, as I could never remember where I put it when I got ready to shower.
We used Caminofacil - costs a bit more but fantastic service.
The only issue was one I caused myself when I dropped a rest day but forgot to update my itinerary online -- they handled it very well, though transporting my bag to the very next stop.
I could access support via WhatsApp - and I...
If you're at all like me, you'll probably overplan and then have to adjust
SJPP is worth an extra day, to help with jet lag if any, but also to be able to make a more relaxed start, then definitely break up that stage into two days by staying at Orisson or Borda which will have to be booked in...
The church at Eunate was a highlight for me. It's a short detour off the Camino Francés. It wasn't open to the public according to the posted hours in the nearby town, but we walked there anyway figuring we could at least see the outside. It turned out that on the day we were there, the...
I wouldn’t count on getting anything in SJPP. We spent an extra day there and I don’t remember any place that had some thing like that.
We didn’t go to every shop so it’s possible I missed something but I usually look for things like that myself. You will find lots of shells and trinkets.
I...
Based on the timing of posts, the OP has already decided what to do today, and they are both already asleep or nearly so.
Agree with others that it's not the time to rush, even though it may seem like the buffer days are ticking away. This is the place where the reality of pilgrimage is...
The main thing I'm hoping that you'll take away from this is to "walk your own Camino."
If you *only* have 30 days because of work or family obligations, and you want to ENJOY the Camino (as opposed to just blitz through it) then strongly suggest starting somewhere a bit closer, and giving...
