We walked 42 days back in 2022, and the last week of walking we were doing shorter days to stretch it out a little bit. Did not want it to end. (We finished on Nov 2nd and we had heard that Nov 1st, All Saints Day, would be very busy in Santiago. So we opted to finish on a quieter day.)...
My wife and I stayed in Burgette at a nice Pension (Pedroarena Rural House). We broke up the Napolean route into two stages using the Mountain Shuttle, so the extra 3 Kms were no problem.
And we found a collection of fellow pilgrims for dinner at Bar Fronton.
A nice little town!
Not really accurate, if you are coming from France. Train right into town from Bayonne, two blocks from the old town.
I understand from many posts here, that it is a pain if you are coming from Spain. But if your intended starting point is SJPdP, then plan your travel to get to Bayonne or...
We climbed up in the rain Oct 2022. The trail was no problem in the rain. Looked through all my photos of that morning, this was probably the worst:

I took the river route two years ago, it was very nice.
I had no trouble following the route. I would think the initial turn to the left after the highway is the most like turn people miss.
We splurged in Logrono and stayed in an AC Marriott, outside the old city, for two nights. I asked the Front Desk for a stamp. They said all they had was a stamp with their name and address on it (I think for mail return address).
They apologized for not having an "official" Camino stamp. :-)
I just doubled checked, since I posted from memory.
SJPdP to Croix Thiballt 14.9 Kms
Croix Thibault to Burgette 13.7 kms (Source Google maps walking directions via Napolean route.)
Both my Village to Vilage Camino Frances guide and Gronze roughly agree with these numbers, although...
We walked all the way to Croix Thibault on our first day, about 17 kms. Then took the Express Bouricot Montain Shuttle ( https://www.expressbourricot.com/passengers-transport/ ) back to our accommodations for the night. The shuttle brought us back to the cross the next morning.
That also...
What about starting from Ourense on the Via de la Plata? (I have not walked this.)
I seem to remember predictions that this would eventually become the "new Sarria" after a High Speed Rail stop opened in that town. Did that ever happen?
I wonder how many Albergues & Hostels were open in 2019 vs 2023. The impression I got when I walked in Sept-Nov 2022 was many private accomodations were permanently closed after the pandemic. That would contribute to "more crowded" with slightly lower pilgrim numbers.
Jim
I tried that out. I don't remember the specifics of what happened, but I did not trust its translation. So I went with Google Translate instead. That worked fine for me.....
My wife and I walked our only camino, to date, last fall. I booked all of our lodgings, mostly private rooms in Albergues or Hostels. I booked all our nights between SJPdP and Pamplona before leaving home. After that, I booked two nights ahead, as we walked. I never had difficulty booking on...
I remember (from last October) that the worst section was the descent into El Acebo. After that is was still a steep downhill, but not particularly rocky or tough footing.
Jim
We walked last fall, right after all the fields had been "manured".
The flies were everywhere. I guess I didn't mention them is because after a week or so, I just stopped noticing them. Towards the end, there are few tilled fields, so the flies went away.
We only had one town where we felt...
I checked on Google maps. There is a bridge over the highway on the route I outlined. There is a second highway crossing, also with a bridge.
The railroad track crossing I found is at grade, on a road with signals.
I didn't find any crossings which would preclude this alternate route.
Jim
That's good that it is your thing, you should do your Camino.
I've seen it once. If I walk through there again, I will consider an alternative, for my Camino...
Jim
I have thought of that, but it does not avoid the urban sprawl of León.
I have played with the Google maps walking route and Google street view. It does seem like this is a viable alternate route, from my quick glance.
Out of Mansilla de Mulas follow road LE-512 which crosses agricultural...
