Hi Karen,
What a wonderful adventure you are embarking on! The first time I walked, it was important for me to walk the whole distance. I had to make adjustments to meet that goal. I am 61 now and the back then, I was 58. My Father, who just died a month or so ago gave me great advice back...
I need to confess, I did the whole of the Camino once (wth some interruptions), but was so obsessed with distance, I missed most of everything but the distances walked and bedbugs. The second time, I spent so much time looking at things and speaking with people, I didn’t finish.
I wouldn’t do...
Hello Everyone,
I am in SJPDP staying in Maison E Bernat and somewhere in my fuzzy memory is a story about Madam Bernat who people had to go to and explain why they were walking to Santiago and she would determine if you were a true pilgrim or not.
I'm sure I don't have the story correct or...
A quote: "Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway." - John Wayne. I walked The Camino in 2015. I will be walking it again this fall. The best advice I received was from my Father....have fun. I was so fearful. I would remember his advice and take a breath.
I will be in...
I would suggest you speak with the ladies at expressbourricot.com. They assisted me going the Route Napoleon a couple of years ago. Last time, I did it (St Jean to Roncesvalles) in two days with a layover at Orisson, this year I am going to do it as a three day stage (going a bit beyond) and...
I have totally enjoyed what you have shared. I am a strong introvert. Being alone versus being lonely are two enormously different situations for me.
Being alone, is being centered and at peace with myself and all around me. Being lonely, is when I need to assess my needs. Some of the time...
Too right! The first time, I did it with a fully loaded backpack. Totally scary. Two women from the Air Force Academy helped me by hauling my backpack up. I was far more cautious the next time and thereafter. I built up.
The Incline is a good prep though.
In your judgement, doing the Barr...
Colorado Springs! We have the obstacle af Denver between us.
One of the advantages we have being "high altitude " people is we have more lung capacity.
You will laugh. I was worried about the stress on my knees, so I bought some expensive knee braces (they also were a weight concern), going down into Roncesvalles, I noticed the both had a "L" logo on them. Thinking I had bought two left knee braces, I wore one upside down for the whole...
I am assuming you will also have expressbourricot also transport your pack?
Another suggestion, break the trip up over the Pyrenees into more than one or two days. I don't know if that will work, but I am trying this idea in the fall with three nights in St Jean.
Maialen at Express...
You are going to have such a wonderful experience. I was really hoping you were the woman I met so I could be present physically to cheer you on and send you off at the airport. I will just do it from here. Go for it! Have fun and be well
To me, it is the journey, not the destination mantra. I walked the first time totally stressed on distances and exhausted myself. My Dad who is 85 remineded me that I was supposed to be having fun. That, to me, meant taking care of my body, but also having time and energy to learn and absorb...
Where are you in CO? I was walking a path a month or so ago in Colorado Springs and saw a woman with a full back pack off of Gold Camp Road. Is that you?
Either way, I wish you happy Trails. Life is good
There are so many things to see along the way. If you do have some extra time, I would suggest taking a day to check them out. A couple of suggestions could be:
Monasteries of Yuso and Suso: these are located in San Millán de la Cogolla (La Rioja), less than ten kilometres from the French...
I am such a simple person and not sure if I should say anything. When I walked, I did meet many people, but I essentially walked alone. When I walked into the Cathedral, I was still hot , sweaty and early for the pilgrims Mass at noon. I sat on a seat right on the aisle, on the pilgrims side...
I walked the first time in 2015 and realized I hadn't allotted enough time. My solution was to take public transportation, bus, train or taxi, into and out of the big cities.
That being said, I want to walk again and do it all.
I hope you have a great time. The Camino is wonderful.
