LIVE from the Camino @Paula P on the Francés

“10 % of my weight would leave my pack at around 11.5 lbs. I think it was a little over 12 or 13 after adding a few last minute things. Hoping I will get stronger as the days go on and can manage better!” You’ll be so much stronger by the time you end, you’ll probably be able to handle 15% on...

LIVE from the Camino @Paula P on the Francés

It's so great when it's finally a reality! Soak it all in - the heat, the cold, the long days, the heavy pack, the amazing people you'll meet, the spectacular scenery, the lovely hosts and albergues, the tiredness.... all of it! Buen Camino!

    Camino Irritants

There were parts of the Camino where the tap tap of the hiking poles irritated me, (although the loud groups blaring music on their devices after Sarria far surpassed that annoyance!). My husband flew to Santiago to meet me at the end and booked an AirBnb for a few days with a balcony...

Vegetarian-friendly meals on the Camino Frances

I eat some meat, but all of my favorite meals were the vegetarian/vegan ones! They were the most creative, delicious, and by far the most nutritious and healthy ones. After a few carb heavy meals, I sought out the vegetarian albergues because I knew that they had fresh veggies. There were...

    Viana

I loved Viana. It's a big enough town without being too big. Lots of restaurants, shops, etc... Just beyond the church is a nice park-like area that's perfect for watching the sunset over the mountains.

Staying in Irache vs Ayegui vs Estella

Helena's was one of my favorite albergues during my walk. It was one of my worst days walking and I happened upon La Perla Negra. Her kindness, hospitality and delicious food was just what I needed.

What to expect on the Meseta in May?

I took that picture too! ❤️

What to expect on the Meseta in May?

This year I experienced a heat wave and cold enough weather that I had to buy an extra pair of long pants and long sleeve shirt. In other words, while there may be a typical weather pattern for that time of year, you could experience anything.

    Pilgrim Office in St. Jean

In May I caught the 9 am train/bus (the ride starts on the train but stops and passengers board a bus for the remainder of the trip to St Jean) from Bayonne. I arrived in St Jean around 10:30 and was on my way well before noon.

    Trail Condition - before Molinaseca

When I was there in June, the rocks were bad but the flies on that stretch were atrocious! I’m not sure which was worse…

What time do most breakfast places open along Camino Frances

There were a few towns that had an open supermercado or restaurant, but they were few and far between. I found that the donativo type albergues (maybe a set price for the stay but donation for food) tend to offer coffee, tea, fruit, maybe a hard-boiled egg and even granola and yogurt to eat or...

Is my daily average goal too ambitious?

I walked with lots of people who cranked out 28-30+km a day consistently. I did several days of 28km and a few over 30. The thing I found is that the first week your body “gets used to” carrying your backpack, walking up and down mountains, over rocks for hours at a time. After the first week...

    I made it!!

Well done! It's a wonderful feeling to walk into the square, isn't it? As someone told me before I began - and I think it's true - the real Camino starts after you get home, so... "Buen Camino!"

Death of a German pilgrim on the Camino Frances

The fires are in the north of Spain. I’m in Cacabelos now and have been experiencing hazy skies for the last several days, along with the smell of smoke from time to time. And of course, the heat. The intense heat.

Thank you for replying. And thank you for your kindness to the daughter. Prayers.

Death of a German pilgrim on the Camino Frances

Did the man have a wheelbarrow/trolley with him that he pulled by a belt on his waist by any chance? I’m trying to figure out if it was a father/daughter that I walked with off and on and stayed with at a couple albergues. Regardless, it’s tragic.

Death of a German pilgrim on the Camino Frances

Does anyone know if it was the partially blind man with the trolley he pulled behind him? I walked and stayed with them in several albergues and if it’s him, he was soaking in every minute and happy to share the experience with his daughter. Whether it was or wasn’t, many prayers for his family.

People walking 35 - 40 KM per day

I’m on the Meseta now and I think for most people, getting out at 5 is more so to beat the heat. I for one would rather walk during the cooler hours and try to be in my albergue doing laundry and resting in the afternoon. I have met people that are doing 38km/day but most of those are people who...
