Another person's opinion ..... I walked to Roncesvalles the first day and was glad I did. As a then-62 year old, I did not find this first day all that tiring. Maybe it was the adrenaline. I stopped at Orrison for a break and then just took my time on the walk. I agree that you should stay in...
I have walked both. I, too, would recommend the Frances as your first Camino. Yes, there may well be times with crowds, but that's a bit dependent on the time of year. (Both of my Caminos were in the spring, so I can't speak to your time frame.) The infrastructure--and fellow pilgrims--help you...
Primarily safety pins. Extra advantage is you can more securely pin them to your pack in the morning if clothes are not yet fully dry. I did this many days with socks (and other items) that were still somewhat moist. As long as it was not a rainy day, they were fine by the time I reached my...
That is absolutely fine. I stayed at the Hotel Cote Basque, very close to the train station, but there are multiple options. Orisson is very manageable, even on a short day. The only downside of this plan is you won't be able to spend much time in St. Jean, beautiful town.
I used OnlyPilgrims multiple times during the last two weeks of my Camino Frances in May. Decent selection, and you can actually pay in advance using PayPal, which might give some additional comfort that you'll really have a bed waiting. However, like Waka said above, with the possible exception...
Echo the recommendation about San Nicolas in Larrasoana. Stayed there in late April and was very good introduction to a good private albergue. Clean, relatively small number of beds per room, lockers, good dinner, nice outdoor area, good small tienda next door.
Phil:
I stayed in the church albergue in early May. They had a strip outlet that multiple folks could use to charge things; I imagine under the circumstances you could get the location nearest the outlet.
I didn't measure the pads but found them to be very comfortable. In fact, I slept on pads...
Can you bring your backpack into churches and other public places along the CF, or are they restricted due to security concerns? Trying to determine if I need to bring a small, light pack for wandering in towns and villages after I've reached the evening's destination. Thanks!
Fred
I will be starting from SJPP on April 25. I have had a terrible problem with pollen allergies this spring in the U.S. Anyone have an idea how bad seasonal allergies might be on the CF beginning in late April?
Fred
mcopeland:
I can't help you much with your questions (first timer on the Camino), but wanted to note I'll be leaving SJPP on 25 April as well. Looking forward to meeting you!
Fred
I noticed the large albergue in Roncevalles has (apparently lockable) lockers for "your stuff." Is that typical or, if not, what do folks do with your belongings when you wander in town, etc.? I am sure most peregrinos will leave your stuff alone, but how much should you be concerned about your...
Thanks, folks! Sounds like some longer walks with the loaded pack I intend to carry would be prudent, along with adding some lunges and similar lower-body work to bi-weekly strength sessions. I've been wearing my intended shoes for a while now (Merrell Blaze Mid) and am pretty pleased with the...
I realize that training and getting into “Camino shape” is very specific to each individual, but I’m hopeful of getting feedback from Camino veterans. I am a 65-year old male planning to do the Camino Frances this spring. I run regularly (around 15+ miles each week), with a weekly long run of...
