Am following your journey! Good luck and stay safe!

    Dazed, Amazed, Confused......& ‘HOME’

Don't know where these ideas got started. We walked from south of Coimbra to Santiago (on the Portugues) and only got one stamp a day. We also walked from St. Jean to Santiago and only got one stamp per day. Never had any difficulty getting my compostela. The frantic search for extra stamps...

    Too old?

Walked 800km of the Frances when I was 64, 750km of the Le Puy when I was 67, and just walked 420km of the Portugues at 69. At the start I wondered how I would do with a 420km trek...well, I did very well. My wife is now suggesting the 1000km Via de la Plata. I’m game...with maybe a 2 week...

    Over 65

I walked the Camino Frances when I was 64 and the Le Puy when I was 66. I hope to do the Portugues in March...a month before my 68th birthday. However, I did train quite a bit before going and didn't develop any problems. I do not suggest tackling the Camino without training. I will say that...

    Camino is a no go

So sorry, Martin. I am pulling for you and hoping that you will be able to go another day. Take good care of yourself in the meantime.

Did you change daily walking distances your 2nd (or 3rd, 4th etc. ) Camino ?

Yes! We walked the Le Puy route this time and purposely tried to slow down and walk shorter distances. When we walked the Frances in 2013 we walked relatively quickly. Jokingly we called it keeping up with the Germans...my wife is mostly German by ancestry. We also walked distances of 25 km...

What to eat between St Jean and Roncesvalles

I always carry a package of dark chocolates with me. Also, I purchased a bocadillo at St. Jean, ate half of it there and carried the other half to Roncesvalles. That was all that was needed. What to bring in terms of food and drink is purely personal. Let your past experience be your guide.

How many rest days did you take & where did you take them?

We had planned to take a day off each week or a total of four days. We actually only took one day off...in Burgos. We seemed to get stronger as we walked and continued to Santiago. The last four days we actually did more than a stage each day...with one day totaling 24 miles. Our total days...

Good Things That Happen On the Camino

Two years ago, my wife and I walked the Frances. The night before departure from SJPdP we scouted out the exit. At that time in March the Napoleon was closed. The morning we left the darkness made it difficult to determine which was the Napoleon and which was the Valcarlos. As we got on the...

Roncesvalles to Irun for the Norte

Thanks everyone for your assistance. MSPath, would love to get the information you referred me to, but my French is not good enough. I tried Google Translate but the translation is poor. Oh well!

Roncesvalles to Irun for the Norte

Hi, last year my wife and I did the Frances from St. Jean to Santiago. Due to heavy snow conditions we had to go the Valcarlos as the Napoleon was closed. This year we would like to start in St. Jean and go over the Napoleon to Roncesvalles. We would then like to go to Irun to begin the...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 BTW, my plane diverted to Bilbao when it was unable to land in San Sebastian due to snow conditions. We were taken by bus from Bilbao to San Sebastian. Snow was on all low mountain tops during that drive. If St. Jean is not...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 Ok, I'm in San Sebastian. Is it agreed with you experts that St Sean is a no go due to the weather condition? ...that even Valcarlos is too risky. FALCON, YOU seem to say Valcarlos is good on the one hand but talk of worsening...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 Thanks much for the link. I will access it if I decide on Thursday to head for Pamplona. Hopefully the information that is available for the St. Jean stage is whether any of the two routes are passable. I am willing to do the...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 Doesn't look good for St. Jean. When we check on the 14th and the conditions stay poor we will take the train from San Sebastian to Pamplona on the 15th or the 16th...and start from there. Maybe we can all get together for a drink...
