I rather enjoyed the Sarria to Santiago segment. I was invigorated by the enthusiasm and excitement of the people just starting out, who were just as nervous as I had been six weeks earlier.
I had not planned to stop in Grañon, as I had spent the night at the prior town. But a fellow pilgrim saw me as I stopped for coffee. She was laid up for a few days to heal and very much needed a familiar face. So I stayed. But I was the one who benefited from the experience. The communal...
I think this is an important point, perhaps depending on the time of year. I was often among the last to leave the albergue, plus I like to walk slowly. My daily distance was generally modest, so my arrival time was generally acceptable. But as tendonitis kicked in, slowing me down even more...
I spent 49 days to walk the CF, including the extra two days to walk into SJPdP. I planned on an average of about 17 km a day, with five extra days built in. I needed every one of them to rest and enjoy the journey. next time I want to plan on about 55 days. So take the time you need!
I totally agree on the importance of visiting the churches, whether large or small, which so reflect the culture and significance of the Camino. I didn't have a separate budget for this, just considered it part of my miscellaneous expenses.
I agree with this! For me, the beginning of a journey, setting the right frame of mind, savoring the moment, was so important. So consider a night in SJPdP and in Orisson, whatever works best for you.
Yes, for hostels only. You might consider budgeting a little extra. I took three much-needed "hostel breaks" and stayed in hotels that offered pilgrim rates for about 25 - 30 euros. It helped me cope with physical issues. I could just rest, relax, nap, and recharge. Buen Camino!
Lots of threads about footwear on the forum. Just wanted to add that you might also consider mud, not just rain/snow. I walked that exact time frame last year, and there was plenty of mud to slog through.
I started in Saint Palais, after seeing a reference to it on the site. I flew into Pau and then took a bus from there, arriving early evening. It was a lovely start the next day. You are right to want to enjoy the Basque countryside! I didn't see any other pilgrims until I reached St. Jean...
You know your own limits, but I hope you understand that you are setting yourself up for a very stressful day. First, you are assuming that you arrive "on time" to SJPdP. Even if you start walking when you expect to, you are committing yourself to a long, hard hike the very first day. The...
I used this exercise for PF with great success. I also took a tennis ball with me to massage my feet. Funny, but I've never had a bout of PF since the Camino!
Buen Camino.
