I visited Atapuerca in fall 2015 and although my Spanish is very VERY rudimentary, I was able to piece together a lot by looking at the informative signs which are presented in several languages. This helped me make a bit of sense of what the guide was showing. That said, I agree with others...
I rode his horse "Boni" (Bonita, beautiful) in 2015. A Spanish father and son rode ahead of me, and VIctor walked with us the whole way. Sometimes I could see by his shadow that he was holding Boni's tail. He goes on foot up to O'Cebreiro and back with his horses sometimes twice a day.
Another vote for Hotel Itzalpea, and for trekking poles! It took me a few days to begin using them effectively but they really helped. I walked at age 62. The first two days (SJPP to Orisson, then to Roncesvalles) were the hardest of the whole Camino for me. Have a wonderful time!
While I was walking 3 years ago, my then-kinda-new sweetie put a big map of Spain on his bedroom wall so he could see what town or village I had reached each day, which I reported by text message that arrived while he was sleeping. He left the big map there on the wall for the next couple of...
Thank you for sharing this. I thought about the loss to Denise's family, and to the family of all peregrinas and peregrinos, as I walked yesterday from Astorga to El Ganso. I sang softly, "Amazing Grace," and "may the long time sunshine, all love, surround you. May the pure light within you...
From Astorga, on my first Camino: I'm a woman of 62 who started solo but made wonderful friends the first night at Orisson. Some are still keeping me company, and I keep making new friends and walking companions as I go. I feel safe on the Camino. Over and over, strangers -- peregrinos and...
I too will start soon (less than three weeks!) and I too am oldish -- over 60 -- and probably undertrained and over-burdened. I am feeling the butterflies, which I call excitement. Wishing you a smooth departure from home and happy feet all the way! (I'm off to remove some stuff from my...
Recently, trying out various new shoes brought back lurking pain in the plantar portion of my left foot.
Going barefoot on tile or hardwood floors is, for me, a recipe for trouble!
So I have been stretching my feet and legs before I get out of bed, and then I step right into the Spenco...
"Mi Vida Loca" on BBC site is fun! (Only drawback: it is not viewable on my iPad.)
Older (80s hair!) but also fun is a "tele-novela" for learners of Spanish language called "Destinos," available online: http://www.learner.org/series/destinos/watch/. Both have helped me get used to listening to...
Hello Denis and wife! Caroline of Express Bourricot collects two people at airport -- maybe you? -- just before me at the Bayonne train station ~ 5:30 pm. I look forward to meeting you both, there or in St. Jean or while walking. I apologize in advance for any silly effects of my jet/train-lag...
