Not that it needs any further promotion, but the Meseta is a true pilgrim experience not to be missed, especially if you are serious about “walking meditation.”
Indeed! Very charming little village, stayed there last March but you were apparently not open or I could not find it. Stayed in a bland, but nice place across from the bodegas.
The inn across from the San Martin church in Fromista and the Monastery San Zoilo outside Carrion were two of my favorites. I walked up to San Zoilo without a reservation and got the pilgrim rate. Absolutely wonderful place.
I walked that last part arriving in Leon on a Sunday. But after the peace and solitude of the Meseta in late winter, I was not into the bustle and tourist thing and kept walking. Doubled back later for the Cathedral and a day in Leon.
I enjoyed the Hotel San Martin, a quaint hotel across from the church with very friendly staff. As I recall, it was around 50E in March, so will be seasonally higher.
The wide range of responses here is an indication of how personal the choice is. Personally, I would walk Sarria to Santiago. With that you can get a flavor of the Camino (good & not so good) and the Compostella. If you have an extra day or two, you can luxuriate in the history and bustle of...
Interesting thread, I planned my first few Caminos to the day with rest days. But now I just pick a start date and allow one day at the end to get to where my flight departs. All in between is a Forrest Gump box of chocolates.
I stopped at the convent in March 2022 and it was locked up tight so I went on to Castrojeriz. Very disappointed, but I saw maybe 5 other pilgrims that day so not surprised. Hope to stay there some day.
Try a walk up to the San Zoilo Monastery in Carrion de los Condes. It’s parador quality, but I got a room for about 50E by walking up and asking late one afternoon.
I realize this is a thread about that specific site, but for a perspective on the challenges and process of cathedral building written in lay terms, try Ken Follett's historical novel, Pillars of the Earth.
Very informative thread. I’m trying hard each Camino to ignore distance and go for interest but it’s hard. This thread is very helpful, I pray it sticks with me on the ground,
From Alto de Mostelera looking back toward Castrojeriz on March 22, 2022; Intermittent rain, stiff wind, 46F. Shredded my almost useless light poncho, but dried out & happy by Fromista. It was a beautiful, solitary Camino day.
I’ve had several walk-up deals in March and April for less than $55US, once at the parador in Pontevedra and once at the San Zoilo Monastery outside Carrion. Both times I asked for their best pilgrim rate and told them I was on a tight budget but wanted to experience their beautiful facility...
I walked Burgos-Astorga last March. If you like solitude, don’t might a chill wind, and can search out accommodations, you’ll love it. The best Camino I’ve walked.
