Just came down that descent yesterday. Track was dry but could be nasty in the wet. Sounds like you would be fine, poles are great, especially for 'dicky' knees. Just take it easy and enjoy the journey!
We are there already with nothing booked either. A camino friend said today he just went to an alberque, not sure which one, before pamplona and there were 8 empty beds. People book but not pay, then don't turn up. The albergues lose and so do the pilgrims wanting to just 'wing it'.
i saw this on the first page. 920kms the French way. maybe its a typo?

There seems to be quite a variation in the total distaance of CF - SJPDP to Santiago. From 790kms to 900kms! Why is this?
Also, regarding the scallop shell to carry - can you bring your own or do you get given one? has significance for me so would like to bring my own.
yes, agreed. starting CF may 2 & only using silk liner. perhaaps a light fleece blanket that could double as a privacy screen. weighs less than sleeping bag.
