I am also a Freemason,
On my last Camino I visited a town called Tomar. The Cathedral there has many symbols and one of only two statues of the Virgin Mary breast feeding the baby Jesus (a must see). You while in Ponferrada you will see the Knights Templar Castle. You will see MANY symbols in...
My suggestion is L'Esprit de Chemin. Almost across the street from the registration office, and excellent food and accommodations. It is run by a Dutch couple. http://www.espritduchemin.org/en
When I worked at the Camino Office last October, I told everyone that I spoke to, that their Camino had just begun. The end of their walk, is the beginning of their Camino of life. What you learn on your Camino will influence not only you, but those around you. You will see, as will your...
I think that the only time you will need the bladder, or additional water is on the meseta. I used bottles (except on the meseta where I used my bladder), BUT, I am going to look at the Smart Tube. Thank you all for the information.
I volunteered at the Pilgrim Office in October, and they were an invaluable resource ! It is located adjacent to Rua Bella, and the doorway is difficult to see, so keep an eye out !
I carried a 1 ltr bottle (collapsible) which I used extensively, I also carried a bladder (other than the one that I was born with ;)) because I was worried about the Meseta. Carry both, in my opinion, to be safe. You will need to hydrate ! If you don't need the bladder, it collapses and...
Villamayor de Monjardin and stayed at a 15th century house run by a Dutch Church…Hogar Monjardin. We had no trouble with them being pushy about praying with them. Don't forget to tour the Castle. The key is at the Bar in the square. Just ask for it.
Terradillos de Templarios Jacques de...
I witnessed some "cheating" when a car pulled up next to some "Pilgrims" and gave them their stamped passports. No reason to get angry, they only cheat themselves. You should feel sorry for them, for they will never know the true Camino and what it means.
Pick the stage you want to walk and research it. Please remember that there is no "leash law" and in certain areas the dogs are not friendly and very protective. Also remember that if you need any medical attention, or need a bed, that it may not be available. Walking at night with the Milky...
I have been using poles hiking the NH 4000 & 5000 footers. They are invaluable for loose footing especially for downhill. We did the Camino Frances, and I had to schedule a knee replacement (which I have done) upon completion. Without my poles, I never would have made it. I used Black Diamond...
Don't be fooled that the first "leg" is the only uphill you will encounter. If you leave from SJPDP stop at Orisson (reservations required) as it will be a wonderful introduction to the Camino experience. It is a tough uphill, but not the only one, so Orisson is a welcome respite. Start slowly...
I did my first Camino at 67. It took 5 weeks, but I allowed myself 8 weeks. Fortunately, I sustained no injuries, but be sure to allow yourself enough time to enjoy your Camino. Don't push yourself, and take time to smell the roses. You won't regret it !
Buen Camino
