I have bought macarons in British Columbia, Canada. First prize for presentation goes to SuperStore in Prince George where I spotted them in a freezer case with a multi-coloured variety, packaged individually in tiny boxes with a cellophane window, with the macaron set on an angle and displayed...
In September 2013 I enjoyed an encounter with a young woman from Australia who was tent camping her way along the Camino Frances. Several of us pilgrims visited with her over food and drink at an outdoor table beside a small town albergue that also had a cafe. At one point she excused herself...
Out here in Western Canada our local Starbucks will make you a Caffè Misto. If you order a short Caffè Misto it will contain a shot of espresso (choice of medium or dark roast) that will be topped up to the 6 ounce level with steamed milk. Floating atop this coffee with milk will be an adequate...
The "monster dormitory" that sleeps about 110 people in one room was the overflow albergue when I last went through, and because the newer and modern albergue at the church was full, I remember climbing into the top bunk in the old albergue in utter darkness at about 10:01 pm!
Maybe the right person that can help you find the perfect place hasn't read this post or isn't even on the Camino Forum. If you are on Facebook you might be able to find a good place through two popular groups, "Slow Strollers on the Camino" or "American Pilgrims on the Camino."
I would have enjoyed meeting someone like you along the trail between Carrion de los Condes and Calzadilla de las Cueza. Although I had sufficient water and food with me, it would have been nice to rest in a chair for 15 minutes or so and chat a bit. I recall at least 2 places where the Camino...
I was about to enter Estella in early May, 2015 when I saw something wiggling near the left edge of the road. I quickly realized I was observing two snakes doing what birds, bees, and educated fleas do, as their own slithery version of the mattress mambo! They didn't notice me watching nor were...
I remember seeing the old water mill on my way walking into Estella in May 2015. It had not yet been transformed into Albergue Curtidores at that point. I am enjoying your Camino from my armchair!
I recommend having your grandmother avoid the treacherous descents at all costs, but if there is a way to visit special places such as Alto Del Perdon, Cruz de Ferro and O Cebreiro with trips to these places as a quasi-tourist with a pilgrim's heart (!) it would be nice for your grandmother to...
Hello Joan,
Tomorrow, September 2 will be the 4th anniversary of my first day walking on the Camino from St Jean Pied de Port. I only walked to the first stopping place at Orisson that day, 8 km straight up the mountain. I think Agnelo began the day after me, and walked all the way to...
Dear Joan,
I am sadly overdue to write you a reply to your email from several months ago. I remember being in Mexico when I read your email on my phone. If it is any consolation, there is an unfinished message to you in my "drafts" file on my gmail that I hope to finish and send asap...
- Emily, here is a post from earlier today regarding a mass to be held for Agnelo next weekend on the 3rd anniversary of his passing. Carmen

I bought a new pair of my favourite wedge-shaped rubber pole tips before my second Camino. My existing tips, though worn down, still had a bit of life left in them so I brought the new tips with, and one day on the Camino I put them on my poles but I put the old ones (that still had some rubber...
This spring my pre-Camino reading included Sonia Choquette's "Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed." Her Camino involved the use of a tour company that transported her luggage and pre-booked her into all of her accommodations ahead of time, and saw her walking typical distances so...
I have walked significant portions of the Camino Frances during two trips to Spain. In Sept-Oct 2013 I had great plans to walk the entire distance from SJPP to Santiago in the time I'd allotted myself. My first 3 days got me as far as Zubiri. By then I had blisters, a streaming cold, and a...
In this forum's listing of "all" albergues on the Camino Frances in one pdf the following information for this albergue in SJPP will hopefully help you:
Maison Kaserna: Private albergue; 12 beds; Bed cost: 15 €; Included in price: B&B; facilities: M, W, D; Phone 559 376 517; Street address 43...
I was appreciating how hard it must have been to walk 18 km while you were still depleted and recovering. Sometimes a body becomes so ill that it takes more than a week to recover to the point where you are hardy enough to take a big hike every day for the next as many days as it takes...
It was months after I stayed at Maison Kaserna that I did some research and discovered (to my surprise) that it was operated by the local Catholic parish. I would have enjoyed knowing that fact at the time. My earlier remark was offhand and reflected that I'd never noticed expressions of...
