I read about bed races and the last 100km after Sarria on the Camino Frances... and I decided to start in August 2018 with the Camino Aragones from Somport -> Camino Frances -> Camino de Invierno and so I had more solitude than if I would have walked only the Camino Frances.
Another important...
I would not wait because of a crowded summer.
As mentioned before you can choose a less crowded camino or a less crowded month.

In 2020 on a Camino in Germany I took a tarp and minimal equipment for sleeping outside with me. Just in case because of corona. I did not need it... so I tried it in the last night... because it added weight to my backpack (which is uncomfortable and may increase the risk of injury ).
Sleeping...
If one of my daughters would ask me such a question in a similar situation, I would say: "Go!"
But I do not know if you get unbiased advice from me or on this forum.
If you look for some videos, you can start e. g. here:

There are many pilgrims and only very few cases of crime.
Portugal and Spain are rather safe countries:
https://www.numbeo.com/crime/rankings_by_country.jsp
And I think, the Caminos are safer than the average holiday regions. And in a group the crime risk is probably almost not existing... or at...
Yes, it can be done in separate trips.
If you do not want to get a Compostela, there are no rules at all.
If you want to get one, there are only these rules on the last 100 km:
[To get the "Compostela" you must... collect two stamps a day on the last 100km ... details here: ]...
On this website www.gronze.com you can see the route and where you can buy things or sleep.
If you take the Valcarlos route, you have about 12km between the stopps in the Pyrenees... so this is very close to your 8 miles:

8 miles would be enough. In this old thread there are tips:

For planing on the Camino Frances:

At the moment (in the last days) the new cases do not rise any longer in Spain. And the deaths are far below the number of deaths in the first wave.
If it hopefully stays like this there is no need for a new complete lock down.

Thank you for your images.
I knew that I want to walk the Camino again as I still was in Santiago de Compostela.
If everything is as planned I will walk again in August.
The general advice is to bring the shoes that fit to your feet... but only one(!) pair of walking shoes (because of the weight). You can change mid day e. g. your socks. And: Do not pack your fears (because of the weight)!
Another pair of very light shoes (e. g. crocs / sandals /... ) maybe for...
Here is some additional advice how to try the shoes (from davebugg):

Point 11 (width of the shoes) was most important for me. I had to buy new shoes because of that. Fortunately before my camino started.
The growth rate on the Camino Frances was already low 2019:

So it seems quite reasonable to me that we have 'Peak Pilgrim' on the Camino Frances...
