I had to stop my 2019 solo Camino at Sarria for the reason you cited: too crowded with fresh pilgrims making the last 100 kms, partying in their high-heeled sneakers. No judgement, just the way it is. I decided to forgo the Compostela the third time, and to respect my internal desire for...
I did the descent on the shale path with great trepidation and as slowly as possible. It had just rained and was extremely slick and steep. If you can avoid this by going down the road, I recommend. This time I was solo, and a young man coming down half an hour later, fell and broke his leg on...
I just finished my third camino...second on the Frances. I recognize how you are feeling, @sugargypsy. I decided to stop my camino before reaching Santiago this time. This was my first time solo, and I have two Compostelas at home, so going to Santiago did not have any urgent appeal. I found...
It will cost you about 1 euro per km by taxi. I took a taxi from Triacastela to Sarria for about 25 euro a few weeks ago. Forget buses...it is quite rural in those parts.
Does anyone know if the numbers are up early and very high? My friends are near Santo Domingo having a hard time up til now getting lodging, but they say it is getting easier near Santo Domingo
Yes, I’m average fitness, female, 170 pounds and my pack is usually 15-17 pounds depending on how much food carrying. That includes 1 1/2 liter of water. Don’t you worry you’ll be fine!
Wonderful information, Andreo, especially helpful to know about the Sunday, Monday pilgrim starts.
The Camino we walked in late September-October on the Frances was just right: great weather and no crowds. We just walked into albergues and were never turned away, and we were late arrivals...
Then again, it seems to me Mrs. Bath is just beginning to get in touch with her "backstory" as to why she is planning the Camino. Far from escapism, it sounds like she is beginning to take in the truth, the truth which might set her free to undertake a new adventure, her own adventure which...
Take heart!
I trained with a few lame walks with backpack in the horrible month of July in Washington, DC...just 5 km and I was wiped out from 90% humidity and heat. I just could not do it. So I just walked when I felt like it in the cool of the evening without gear or concern for distance--...
Thanks for your most interesting responses, all!
@ranthr, I too really disliked walking over that higher bridge.
@Viranani, yes, I felt the same way about Portomarin.
This is Portomarin in Spain, through which we walked on the Camino de Santiago over that scary bridge in the distance...notice its two levels. Portomarin was flooded during Franco's era and rebuilt further above water level, hence the bizarre bridge. Camino pilgrims on the Frances route are in...
Last year, Easter fell almost as early as it can, March 27, so the full moon at the Spring Equinox fell almost on the day of the equinox. So this year, the full moon falls quite a ways after the equinox on April 11. Hence the following Sunday, April 16th is Easter, 19 days later than last...
The Brierley guide turned out to be the only reading material I cared to read
on the Camino. The walk was all-consuming of my energies, so to sit down
at a cafe with my beverage and the Brierly was always the break to refresh me.
I agree about the language barrier. If Spanish is not an easy...
Actually, Rosa and Girard indeed knew that there was no hospitalero in the pipeline to take over for them when they left in October, but they had to move on, of course.
They probably did not talk about it much to arriving pilgrims; it came up only because I was asking Girard about their...
So sad to hear this, but I had an inkling this might happen when we stayed there in late September
with Marie-Rosa and Girard, the wonderful hospitalero couple who ran that albergue for three years non-stop, only closing on Mondays. They were exhausted and planning to relocate to Brazil at the...
Wonderful, Margaret, just wonderful!
Thank you for all your help and support while we prepared and your kind words
when we were on the road....
So amazed you completed your 8th Camino!
We walked into Santiago about 5 weeks before you, October 30th.
We took 34 days, but skipped some of the...
Just put up my latest post with a slideshow
of photos. It covers our arrival in Santiago.
I also plan to post our daily itinerary soon, and in some detail, so that other pilgrims can get an idea of how milage may vary!
Thank-you all for your interest; the most traffic on the blog is coming...
And so the warning is....?
I stayed at Maribel Roncal's Cizur Minor Albergue
and found it delightful. She is a truly generous soul
who loves looking after pilgrims. It was a priviledge
and an honor to stay in her albergue.
