I too will cast my vote for Porto. I have been to each one a few times and really enjoy them both though I do think I like Porto just a little more. The main factor is it is more convenient for you this trip.
Best of luck with your decision but I hope you know there is no wrong answer here.
Mike
I have walked from Porto twice starting mid September and it is a beautiful time to walk. Two years ago it was pretty crowded. I think around October first would be good though the farther North you get the cooler and wetter it could be.
I don't think you can go wrong either way. They each have a lot to offer and each is a different experience. I have walked all three and liked the solitude and natural beauty walking from Ourense the best but I definitely enjoyed each route.
I agree with TMcA. I have done it both ways. I didn't mind the walk out of the city but the year before I took the metro to Matosinhos mainly due to the very heavy rain at the time.
Bom Caminho!
I have walked a few caminos in Portugal and language was seldom a problem. The locals were always very helpful to me and did not shy away from communication even when we did not have a common language. With your Spanish you will quickly be able to understand most signs and menus and if you learn...
Very enjoyable town with great food and Fado music but everything seems to be at the very top or very bottom of a very steep climb! Sorry I don't know where to get sticks but I sure used mine there!
Bom Caminho!
Thank you very much, I appreciate it and I certainly hope so!
Thanks Peter, I was hoping this was the year we would meet on the trail but alas it wasn't meant to be. I guess there is always next year!
That would be wonderful, I hope it happens! I will be carrying a 20 liter bright green...
My turn has finally come. I enjoyed the coastal route and the Portuguese so much last year that I am going back to walk the Portuguese Central route, Sanabres, then the Inglés route again. I will first start with 4 days on Sao Miguel and visit the three towns on the west side that my grand...
Last year I took a took the train from Lisbon to Fatima then a taxi to Tomar (on the camino.) Sorry I can't remember how much the taxi cost.
Bom Caminho!
I think carrying a day pack and sending another pack forward could work quite well. Many albergues are familiar with the service offered by Tuitrans to send bags forward and many people use the service without being part of a prearranged tour.
Welcome Jay! (I'm originally from Sacramento) I would have trouble walking without my (very light) pack because I would be afraid that I didn't have some essential item with me when I needed it such as my first aid kit, or my coat, or rain gear or who knows what. For me it would be one thing...
Trail runners worked great for me last year on the Portuguese Coastal route and I will wear the same type this year on the Portuguese Central route.
Where will you be starting? I expect to be leaving Porto on September 8th and will probably end up somewhere around Vilarinho.
Bom Caminho!
I'm sorry to hear that Coleen, I hope she has a speedy recovery. The only bag transfer services I can find offer service from Porto to Santiago but none from Lisbon. The main one I know of is Tuitrans.
