Portugal Weather - Pilgrims - best time to walk

I just finished a hike from Lisboa to Santiago, March 12 to April 10, 2015. I got one day of drizzle. The mornings were a bit chilly, but for the most part, the weather was perfect for walking. I highly recommend March to April to walk in Portugal.

Stage 1: Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira > Considerations

Metro station in Povoa. I looped back via metro to Lisboa and then back to Povoa the next day.

    Why not start in Azambuja?

Good idea. There is another marked route that starts west of Villa Nova de Reina. Azambuja is a good place to start IMO. I started from Lisboa and had some ugly patches. I also recommend the walk from Santarem to Fatima. IT IS LOVELY

    From Lisbon

Mario in Santarem is a cool dude.

    From Lisbon

To avoid the north POrto slog, take the metro to Maia. No shame in that game.

    From Lisbon

    From Lisbon

I hit povoa my first day out of Lisboa. I took the metro back to Lisboa to my hotel and then the train back to Povoa the next day. NOTE Brierly's guide has the Povoa metro station in the WRONG place. It is a KM or more south of where it is in Brierly guidebook.

    From Lisbon

I just finished a camino from Lisboa to Santiago. You may want to consider doing an alternate route from some place like Sienna or jump ahead to Azambuja. While there are friendly people and some nice spots, there are some long slogs through the sections within the municipality of Lisboa...

Just finished - Camino Portugues from Valenca

Congratulations! I just finished Caminho Tejo/Caminho Compostela from Lisbon to Santiago. The Portuguese people (generally) are very friendly and kind. I highly recommend staying Seminario Menor and Hospederia San Martinho Pinario in Santiago. They are very atmospheric and connect you to the...

Stage 1: Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira > Considerations

If you head south from the roundabout on the N-10 in Povoa there are several restaurants where you could ask about a cuarto. Lisboa to Alverca is pleasant, for the most part. The "bad stretch" is between Alverca and Alhambra along the N-10 and then again between Villa Nova de Reinha and...

Stage 1: Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira > Considerations

Just completed my first day out of Lisboa. I made it to Povoa, and discovered that Brierly's map places the Povoa rail station in the wrong place! The Povoa station is South of the bridge that goes over the railway. It's about 1.5 km south of that bridge and maybe 2.5 km south of where the icon...

Stage 1: Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira > Considerations

Thank you for these notes about this stage. I am starting tomorrow from Lisbon. Another thing, there are a lot of drug addicts and street hustlers in Lisbon. It is a function of de criminalization of "personal use" drugs. I have been offered drugs literally a dozen times today, and I arrived at...

    Equipment

I am bringing a sleeping bag liner and a cashmere shawl/blanket. I will be walking from Lisbon to Santiago/Finisterre" starting in March.

Cotton Shirts for the Coastal Portugues Camino?

Patagonia silk weight T-shirts are great. They come in Merino and Capiline. The Camino is not an exercise in survival, but whenever I think of cotton clothing in the context of hiking I recall the phrase "cotton kills".
