As the other half of "we" in @jungleboy 's post above, I second this recommendation. Here is my "refer a friend" link that you can use to sign up for a Wise account and get a fee-free transfer of up to €500.
Thanks very much, @trecile ! Since I use a Wise card when traveling I generally don't have to worry about this stuff, but I'm about to lead a tour group around Portugal, made up mostly of Americans, so it's good to be able to advise them correctly.
This is true. I suspect what happened is that the transaction went through without the conversion both times, and unfortunately the first time no one ran after the OP to give them their money.
Now I'm confused, @trecile 🙃 I thought the general advice on this forum has been to pay in your home...
Like many others on this forum, I highly recommend the Variante Espiritual, especially the section known as the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga (Stone and Water Route). It was one of the top highlights of my Caminho Português.
Where are you starting your Camino? From Porto there will be more options because there are more pilgrims/tourists, and therefore more people with various dietary needs requesting meals.
From Lisbon to Porto, options are fewer but it's certainly doable. Traditional Portuguese restaurants don't...
There is certainly prejudice against Brazilians in Portugal, and I'm sure language is one aspect of that. Personally I find Brazilian Portuguese much more pleasant to listen to, and also easier to understand, even after 5.5 years of living in Portugal. But Brazilian is what I learned first, so...
I can definitely see how that would be important for someone learning English for business purposes, and in the case of Brazilian/European Portuguese, I'd say the differences are much greater compared with the differences among varieties of English. Even the word for "you" that's most commonly...
I'll let @jungleboy reply to the guidebook question, but I just wanted to point out that the Portuguese taught by Duolingo is Brazilian Portuguese, which is beautiful but VERY different from the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. Basic words like breakfast, bathroom and train are completely...
I second letting the feet cool down, and I recommend not just taking off socks and shoes but also soaking them in cool water when possible. I actually carry a collapsible basin on Camino that I use as a foot bath, but streams and lavadouros (traditional places for doing laundry) also provide...
I just looked it up, and it seems it was at Rua de António Maria Cardoso 22 in Chiado and has since been turned into luxury housing. I´ll have to look for it next time I´m in that area.
Thanks for posting this! I'm preparing to give a tour of Lisbon tomorrow to a group of tourists, and the Thames report was really helpful for my research.
Here are a couple of articles I've written about things to do in Porto: one on its museums and another on the city's ties to Harry Potter, if that's of interest to you:

Good tip, I agree that migas are a great option! Recipes do seem to vary a lot from region to region (or maybe just from cook to cook). I've had some migas where the kale was the primary ingredient rather than the stale bread crumbs.
Another veg protein source that you'll find everywhere in...
When @jungleboy and I stayed there in 2020, Fernanda told us that she had had to start charging a fixed price because, sadly, some pilgrims were abusing the donativo concept, so she could not afford to continue operating that way. Her hospitality is beyond amazing and is certainly worth more...
Thanks for sharing this. The Portuguese government website only mentions the EU certificate and the UK document, so I think technically if you don't have either of these then they should require you to show test results. But it's not surprising that accommodation owners are interpreting the...
By all means please do help people, but spreading wrong information is not helpful. 🤷♂️ You stated quite confidently that there was "no way" someone would have to be tested to check into a hotel, and that is the exact opposite of the current reality in Portugal.
In response to @Anniesantiago...
I'm sorry but you are very misinformed. You ARE required to show proof of vaccination or a test when checking into any accommodation in Portugal (hotels, AirBnBs, albergues, etc.).
However, a UK proof of vaccination is also accepted in this case. Here's what it says in the FAQ secion of the...
I believe that paragraph only applies to the nationalities who are otherwise required to quarantine (Brazil, India, Nepal, South Africa and UK). Since the US is not one of those countries, it shouldn't apply to you.
