We walked frm Oporto in 2010. We flew to Paris, then Madrid for a few days, the Santiago. We used the Camino Travel Center to make reservations for us in SDC, get us bus tix to Oporto and other reservations for when we got back to SDC. Ivar had the business then and one of his staff was a...

    Walking out of Porto

It's been over a year since we set out to walk from Porto to Santiago. I have finally gotten around to editing and captioning so pix we took along the way. I've posted them at http://bit.ly/uJlwpV We wanted to walk, as pilgrims, from the Cathedral, but the guides, (and some forum members)...

    camino portuges

We walked from Porto last October and thoroughly enjoyed it. There are albergues along the way and hotels in all of the towns. You can download a guide from the Confraternity of Saint James at their website, http://bit.ly/m9TRVN. This organization has begun posting and they appear to be an...

    portuguese camino

Hi, Karin My wife and I made the same walk last September. We speak a little French and a little Spanish, but no Portuguese. We had no trouble at all. Many Portuguese speak English and many also speak French. And gestures work well, too. We were standing near the N13 in front of Residencial...

Water availability on the Portuguese Camino

My wife and I walked from Porto last September and had no problems finding water. Besides fountains, there are cafes in most villages of any size. Go to http://www.alberguederates.com/index_EN.html where you will find excellent stage maps with lots of detail on what you will find along the...

    Bus Transport from Porto

There are 2 other choices. 1). We walked out of Porto from the Cathedral last September. While at least one guide describes the walk as difficult and somewhat dangerous, we found it to be rather pleasant, even in the "suburbs." The waymarks had apparently be recently repainted and were fairly...

    ATM Availability?

June and I walked from Porto last September and found ATMs all along the way. We did have a few problems with our credit cards in some places (at Hotel Do Terco in Barcelos, for example), They are not the "chip on board" type - just Visas from the US. So, we got in the habit of carrying...

    Walking out of Porto

So, June and I decided to start our walk from the Cathedral. There is no “right” place to start. Maybe it depends on the purpose of your camino. We felt we were going to make a pilgrimage and that ought to start at the Cathedral. It would have some really good and some not so good aspects...

    Walking out of Porto

My goodness, I see I started this post back in January! Now we've made our plans, booked our flights and this post is to "re-introduce" us to this welcoming community. Next Sunday we leave for Paris. A couple of days there, then a flight to Madrid to visit the Prado, Reina Sophia and Thys...

    Walking out of Porto

The guides note a dangerous crossing at Araujo, (dual carriageway with a barrier in the middle). Brierly mentions some alternatives, including "to continue straight on towards Padrao Moreira), still a busy main road but, to our old bones, better than having to vault the divider. He also says...

    Starting from Porto April 16

Kit, I hope you post your experiences. I'm especially interested in how you handle accommodations on some of the longer stages. We're starting out in September from the Porto Se. Buen Camino Tenha uma viagem boa Chris

To all those walking the Camino Portugues

I downloaded your guide from the CSJ site. I chose the .doc format option so I can "edit in" some notes of my own. I certainly will provide feedback. By the way, John, I love your videos (youtube). Chris

    Ponte de Lima in September

Quoting from John Brierly's guide, "a sea of humanity floods the town in the biggest party of the year that goes on for 3 days, 24 hours a day." Maybe we'll shift our schedule to miss that!

    Ponte de Lima in September

If I remember correctly, the festival is the third weekend in September. We'll be walking that route at that time and will probably book a hotel early and enjoy the festival. June and Chris

    Walking out of Porto

I've read that many pilgrims from Porto take a bus or the metro out to Maia and begin their walk there, thus avoiding a walk through the city and suburbs. But we want to walk from the Cathedral. Are we out of our minds?? We'd appreciate it if some who have walked from the Cathedral would...

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. This is the best forum I've visited. Great information and one feels like part of a very welcoming community. Chris

    Language limitations

We're going to set forth from Porto in September. We know a bit of Spanish but no Portuguese. We can read some Portuguese but the pronunciation is very different. Has anyone had problems because of a lack of the language?? And, I love this forum. Loaded with info..... Chris and June
