Hmm... well it's not quite as well catered for as the Frances.
Watch out for Sundays. I spent a Sunday night at a place called Briallos with nowhere to find food. There was a rumour of a shop a km or so away that some other pilgrims went to find only to discover it was shut on Sundays. Spent...
Hi, I was interested and saddened to read this.
I will be honest though and say that I also found the Portugese part of this route quite uncomfortable as a woman. In general though I found quite a lot of respect whilst walking during the day, dressed in hiking gear clearly as a pilgrim, but...
Hi, i walked in may last year from porto. Some parts of the way were under several inches of water, some parts involved fairly loose stones, however mostly the paths/roads were good.
I walked it in sandals so that's possible but I wouldn't recommend it. I would always go with whatever you find...
Hi, you may to budget significantly more for the portugese part of the route as there are some places without albergues where you may have to stay in hotel/guesthouse type accomodation around 25-40 euro maybe? Once across the border in spain there are standard galician albergues so it's pretty...
Hi, as has been said you've pretty much covered the issues.
You're right there are some pretty long walks on the portugese without intermediate accommodation. It depends how you feel about it. The portugese route is fairly easy terrain, very pretty (the bit in portugal at least!) and may be...
Hi,
There was a perfectly nice albergue next to the fire station (manned by very nice firemen!) in Valenca. Near to the citadel - I think on the left as you walk into town but I couldn't give you directions from the train station. Separate dorms for men and women, nice washing/kitchen...
Hi,
I would think it'll be a bit cold in march, I would take a sleeping bag with you rather than just a liner. On the portugese side the accomodation is mixed but I think most had pillows and sometimes extra blankets. Once in Galicia all the albergues give you standard issue Galician cover...
I'm a big fan of getting a credential in advance: http://www.csj.org.uk/how-to-get-a-credencial.htm
But I think you can get them in the cathedral in Tui. Not totally sure though as it was closed when I was there.
I walked in May and it was really very very hot, much more so than the more...
Hi, yes Tui is quite a common starting point and will qualify you for a compostela. Be sure to try to get stamped twice a day though as I think you're supposed to if you start in Galicia.
I think there are buses between Vigo to Tui.
I also met someone who walked it!
Hi,
you can get a credential in the cathedral in porto.
there was a desk on the right as you go in (with postcards and such) we asked there.
bom caminho!
Re: CP end of July
I think the sleeping bag thing is up to you, but it's possible you could skip it. I took a big one (quite lightweight in itself) sent it back to england quickly and bought a REALLY small thin one whilst out there. There was a spanish couple i saw quite a few times with really...
Thanks! Yes I'm still a bit unclear on the rules, I know it's possible to do the camino in stages and all the rules seem to state that you just have to walk the last 100km but there's no mention of stops etc. However I received a message from someone saying that they saw a a guy refused a...
Hi Annie,
I walked May/June this year Porto-Santiago and found the route absolutely beautiful. I didn't have any fears about walking alone (though I only walked some of Spain alone my boyfriend having given up after walking through Purrino but my friend walked some of the portugese section...
Hee, that may be true but my friends took the bus and of course had no idea where to get off and missed the stop!! They had to navigate their way back to the route from the next place! Obviously it depends on your level of portugese and your ability to negotiate bus travel... I'm more of a metro...
Hi, I think if I was to do it again I would definately take the river/coast route out to Santa Clara and from there walk up to Rates which was a nice albergue. Santa Clara looked nice but there wasn't an albergue so you would be looking for private accomodation I would imagine.
Everyone I met...
Hi, we survived with just english and a basic understanding of spanish. We had a portugese phrasebook that we used for ordering food and drinks etc but mostly our attempts were laughed at. In the big towns and the tourist areas everybody seemed to speak english, also anywhere connected with the...
