I would just like to repeat John's words. This is a slightly dodgy road crossing, but with eyes wide open, should present no difficulties at all....
The harder part of the journey is the next 1-2 km of ascent.....
Gyro
Certainly the walk through the old town is wonderful, so the first 2 or 3 km from the cathedral is well worth it.
But there is a dull 8 or 10 km through the outskirks.....
I took the "metro" to Azaujo and walked from there. And thoroughly enjoyed walking to Rates for my first stay.
In any...
Dear SA,
I am delighted to try and respond to you. Your questions are entirely reasonable.
1. yes, 10 days is a reasonable time to walk from Porto to Santiago. I took 8 but chose a couple of very long days.
2. If you find yourself needing a rest day, then take one. Your body, especially your...
Dear Este- SA,
Thank you for your question.
I think that the Camino Portuguese would serve you very well as a modest introduction to Pilgrimages and to Iberia. It is quieter than the Camino Frances, the stages between towns are not so onerous and the countryside is beautiful.
If you can, why...
Dear John,
Many thanks for posting this information. I am sure it will be useful for other pilgrims.
I have been thoroughly enjoying the pilgrimage. The weather has been quite wet, with rain showers most days. The Spanish press --surprise, surprise-- are making a story out of this, stating that...
Dear all,
Just to prove how stupid a grown man can be....
A few days ago, I walked the gentle 16km from Rates to Barcelos, arriving before noon. I decided to continue along the path in the direction of Ponte de Lima. I would - I felt sure - pick up accommodation along the way. There are a...
Dear all,
Well, here I am on the CP and I am typing this on the library computer in Ponte de Lima.
One suggestion for leaving Porto: take the metro to Araujo - some 14km or so from the cathedral.
The metro station is only 500m from the village square, where a cafe will set you up with...
Dear Jo/Hecate,
How kind of you to post this note. Yes, I fly out next Sunday, have decided to spend a day in Porto on Monday and then will hit the road on Tuesday 7th. I will be walking the central route.
Started to make a pile of clothes, notes, walking poles etc in the dining room. With...
Dear Laura,
Re-invigorating a thread, I see that we have two or three weeks before our respective journeys.
I am still arriving in Porto on 5th April and will start the next day. I think that I am ready to go....
How are your plans developing? Are you still going to start on April 1st?
Best...
Griffo,
I can thoroughly recommend the on-line guide. John very kindly sent me an advance copy and it has been invaluable in my planning.
Many thanks again John!
Gyro
Dear Griffo,
Nice to hear from you and look forward to seeing you on the camino.
Look out for a lumbering Scots pilgrim, accompanied by a tall, fast, young German.
Gyro
Dear all,
Christmas Eve, an entire day of festive activities, last minute shopping and preparing for the big day tomorrow.
So now I am enjoying a few minutes of contemplation on another topic: the CP in April 2009. The plane tickets are bought, the first night in Porto booked and the CSJ pilgrim...
Dear LAura,
You will be a few days ahead of me. Two German friends and I will arrive in Porto on 5th April. Perhaps circumstances will result in our meeting...perhaps not. In any event, buen camino.
Gyro
and here I am, another dreamer. I bought my Ryanair tickets last week.......April will come soon enough.
If you could, please, send me a copy of your guide, I for one, would be enormously grateful.
Pilgrimage kicks off on 7th April
Gyro
John,
Can you give us any update on this new guide?
I am scheduled to start the CP in April and would be grateful for any current information.
Kind regards
Gyro
Javier,
Many thanks for this. I actually have a copy, but I really appreciate you letting me know.
Do you know of any other guides to this Camino. The Brierley (sp?) is one and I know that CSJ is piloting a new guide. any others?
Gyro
Dear Nich,
Yes, as John says, please tell us all about it.....
and being completely selfish for a moment, I am planning to tackle Porto-SdeC next April, so any new information on hostels, dogs, rivers, bedbugs or whatever would be REALLY appreciated.
Buen Camino
Gyro
Dear JOhm,
I am planning to walk from Porto to SdeC in April 2009. I suspect that this would be too late to assist you with the new guide, but if there is any way I can help -Beta testing or the like - please let me know.
Kind regards
Gyro
