    Vila Conde to Barcelos

Hi Andrew, there's a few options from VdoC to Barcelos or Rates and some informative forum threads. I'd suggest putting. Vila do Conde in the forum Search box for a start and getting back if you have questions. Have a great Camino!

River Route or Aqueduct to Rates from Vila Do Conde

The aqueduct route is quite possible, though good directions (see brierley) are essential. The route is completely unmarked, no signs or arrows and not that many pilgrims to follow . There's a fair amount of tarmac, I don't remember it being on busy roads once beyond VdoC.

    Purchasing Trekking Poles in Porto

Take a look at the Decathlon store in Porto, they usually stock a good range of walking poles and outdoor gear.

    Coast to interior connections

A GPS track would be very useful, has anyone got one? Otherwise the directions I followed are in the Brierly Camino Portuguese guidebook. Some kind of guidance is definitely needed. It's not overly complicated but there are several turns and no comforting yellow arrows until Rates.

    Coast to interior connections

There is a route from vila do conde to Rates which avoids dangerous roads. I think this is different from the way you took because this one is not waymarked at all. It follows the old aqueduct due north from V do Conde then goes NE through Beiriz. I followed it not so long ago using written...

    Porto or Santiago

Theres much to be seen in both cities. In my opinion it's good to properly absorb and celebrate completion of a pilgrimage before setting off on the journey home. I'd suggest staying in Santiago, particularly if this is your first Camino. Having said that I'd personally like to explore Porto more!

Very dissilusioned. Can't wait to finish

Hope you can get a good night's sleep soon. I find sleeping badly can really affect my attitude to being on Camino. When albergue life gets too much for me I book in to somewhere else for a night if I can. This either restores my enthusiasm for communal living or reminds me I can also enjoy a...

    Maps necessary?

Hi jogwalker, that hostel near Porto airport is very handy and the metro system has a station just a few minutes walk away. From there you can take a train to the edge of the city, either towards the coastal or inland routes. See Brierley for details. Way marking on the route is generally good...

    New at this...

And Porto has a fine metro system so you could, for example, do a day or two walking up the coastal Camino then take the metro back, or carry on walking, depending on how much time you have. There is also a more inland route to explore. Should be plenty of info on routes and transport on this...

    Camino Portugues Autumn2017

Hi Laur There's no dedicated pilgrim office in Porto as far as I know. It would be good to bring information with you. Have you looked through the Camino Portuguese section of this site? There's plenty of blogs and some guides that I think would help you to make some more detailed plans. I...

    Accommodation

Hi Will There is plenty of accommodation on this route. Winging it gives max flexibility. Booking can be useful if you are planning any long days with late afternoon arrival, particularly closer to Santiago and any coastal holiday towns. There is also a parallel accommodation thread for...

    Walking sticks on the Portuguese

Hi Clark yes you won't be crossing the Pyrenees but the CP isn't flat all the way. Using poles is really down to personal preference, I find they just seem to make walking easier on knees, hips and ankles nowadays but never bothered with them until recently. Maybe try out some long-ish walks...

    Camino Portugues hesitation

Hi Rossco, I'd say the Porto to Finisterre section has plenty of walking off road through some fine towns and villages, with the option of taking a route along the sea. I haven't walked the Lisbon to Porto section so can't comment. For road walking I carry a super lightweight fluorescent...

    Bed rush on the Portugues

Do they do Semana Santa processions in Portugal? An extraordinary experience in some Spanish towns and cities. Might not be so impressive if you have to sleep under a bush somewhere, hope you find a bed.

    Portuguese Camino

Hi Ian I reckon you'd find somewhere near the cathedral in Porto. Enterprising merchants have been selling scallops to pilgrims on various Caminos since at least the 13thCentury. It's a fine route, (or routes as there are different options from Porto) have a great Camino!

    Porto To Santiago, April 2017

Hope you survive the pastry challenge and meet up with some good companions on the way.

Central Route From Porto, First Walking Day April 7th

That clarification was helpful for me thank you- though I think that the names 'Central' and 'Interior' seem so interchangeable that confusion is likely to continue.

Crossing point of no return for the Portuguese, but where to start?

I'd second the Finisterre option, it gives a good contrast to the CP from Porto and offers the opportunity to relax on a beach which I think is a fine way to finish a pilgrimage.

Camino Portuguese 1st time walker - Misc Qs

Hi Grace, i felt very safe walking the CP. Take the usual precautions you would travelling anywhere. There will be other pilgrims walking at the same time which can give a sense of safety and local people are, by and large, very kind and helpful. I'm not sure about your emergency number. The...

Recommendation for pilgrim hostel in Porto

I liked the airport hostel, 20 min walk from airport, near metro to get to either coastal or inland routes, good pilgrim atmosphere.
