Just started planning my coastalk walk this afternoon and this exact question came to mind. Didn't expect to get an answer within seconds as soon as I logged in. Thank you!!
When I was doing this stretch of the Camino Portugues in May, I followed the arrows religiously. Before I knew it, I was already on the big detour on tarmac and completely missed the green route. As soon as I passed Pombalinho, I ignored the arrows and followed my GPS to get to the albergue...
If meeting other pilgrims is important to you, you may want to consider starting in Porto instead, and overnighting in towns where most other pilgrims stay, ie Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron. Most of the pilgrims I met in and after Tui a couple of weeks ago had started in...
Another option is what I did a couple of weeks ago: Alvaiazere-Alvorge (25km from Alvaiazere)-Condeixa-A-Nova (21km from Alvorge)-Coimbra (18km from Condeixa).
In Alvorge, I stayed at Casa Vale Florido, and in Condeixa-A-Nova, I stayed at Pousada Condeixa Coimbra, both of which can be found on...
kelseyvita69 - I am sorry for my late reply. I actually started my Camino Portugues the same time as you (although I started in Santarem rather than Lisbon), and also didn't like the long days on the 'standard' itinerary. So, instead of doing Santarem-Golega-Tomar, I broke it up into...
I have just done the section between Santarem and Coimbra on the Portuguese (central) route a couple of weeks ago. On the first day, I only met 4 pilgrims who appeared to be 2 couples. After that, I never met a single pilgrim on the way on the following 3 days over a distance of more than 80km...
Agreed, but this solution assumes that: (1) there is a grocery / supermarket nearby; (2) it is open (and from my experience, it often isn't); (3) you don't mind doing all the shopping and cooking after a long day of walking in terrible weather (either extreme heat of 37C or rain).
Factors (1)...
I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian (no fish). I am currently on the Camino Portugues and only 16km from Santiago, having completed the section from Santarem to Coimbra and then from Tui to here (Picarana). My overall assessment is that in big towns with tourists in addition to pilgrims (namely Tomar...
I am really sorry, yorkshirepilgrim. I only just saw the other day your old post back in December asking where to buy walking poles in Lisbon, so it is not like you went unprepared. All I can say is, maybe that's fate, which is another way of saying what you said - maybe the Portugues really was...
This was exactly what I had been wondering before! I wasn't sure whether the stamps had to be specifically 'Camino' stamps in order for them to count. But as soon as people started telling me that there would be a stamp everywhere, I figured that any stamp for official / business purposes would do.
Many thanks! I just Googled it and found the exact address as well. Not being familiar with Portuguese addresses, I misread the earlier post and thought it meant Decathalon Av. ... :p
Just the info I need! I can see 'Decathlon Amadora' on my GPS. Is that the same place? When I searched for 'Antonio Augusto', however, I got directed to another side of town, somewhere near Hotel Eduardo VII.
Hi notion 900 - I am sorry if I am hijacking this thread, but your comment just prompted me to wonder if I CAN in fact use my existing credencial for the Camino Portugues this year, even though I have used it last year for part of the Le Puy route, which of course is a different route...
Thanks for your reassurance about navigation. I really enjoyed engaging with the locals when I was doing the Le Puy route because I could communicate with them in their language. Not so in Portugal though! The dogs seem to be a real worry. I shall start a new thread to seek advice in that regard!
Yes, this was one of the reasons why I have timed my visit to Fatima such that I won't be there until more than a week after the Pope's visit. I won't be staying in Fatima either and will only visit as a side trip from Tomar.
I'll start walking in Santarem around mid to late May. I have seen quite a few others in this forum mentioning that they are starting in or around Lison in May, so my guess is this is the beginning of the popular season for this route.
