Crossing point of no return for the Portuguese, but where to start?

If I did it again I would fly to Lisbon and take the train to Tomar and start there. I don't think you would want to miss the trail from Tomar to Porto.

Do I need to be able to speak Portuguese

We did not speak Portuguese but a little Spanish which wasn't to helpful. We were able to get buy on our English and pick up some Portuguese along the way. The route isn't marked as well as the Frances and the distances were longer between places to stay (30K + days). I would say the first 3-4...

Are there enough Albergues from the Porto to Santiago?

YJ, You didn't indicate where you were going to start the Camino Portuguese. Albertino has given good advice from Porto but if you start in Lisbon it becomes a little more complicated with some large distances between Albergues. There are numerous threads on this with some solutions to the long...

    A Different kind of Camino

My Wife and I started walking the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon on September 5 unfortunately our last walking day was to Ansiao after only 7 days. I had strained my back the day before we left to Lisbon and had been struggling along but severely injured it trying to wash my lower legs. For the...

    The Portuguese Sept/Oct 2014

Wildplace, We will also be looking for a post office to mail small bag to Ivar. There is one at the airport but we will want to use our travel clothes for the couple of days we plan on spending in Lisbon. We understand there are numerous ones about the city so it would depend where you are staying.

    Water on the Portuguese Camino

Sorry Diogo92, Muscle cramps would be a sign of low electrolytes either in your sleep or while walking. Low fuel would be similar to what they call "bonking" In the Tour de France or "hitting the wall" in a marathon.

    Water on the Portuguese Camino

Flewitheagles, The bars are great for regular nutrition as your taking them it takes about 30-45 minutes for getting them to fuel your body. The bananas are especially good they provide quick fuel with some natural sugars and potassium which helps replenish some electrolytes. what you described...

    Water on the Portuguese Camino

Flewitheagles, The last 2 Caminos I carried small dry packets of Gatorade and my wife used poweraide (they don't weigh much). You need to replace electrolytes on a regular basis especially as you sweat it will be obvious with the salt lines on your clothes. I come from a marathoning and cross...
