Will Trip 1 include Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador?
There are some nice cottages on Grand Manan Island (NB) and the north shore of the St Lawrence east of Quebec City is lovely.
I can’t speak to the Portugese or Inglis … but happy planning.
I’ve ‘hopscotched’ between caminos in the past and the gites and hostels generally don’t care. Many along the Le Puy don’t even ask to see your credential, since they are also a GR route with many French walkers who will never go to Santiago.
I recall an American couple who walked from Le Puy...
Before rushing out to buy stuff, take a look at what you already have. Even in April, a good pair of training shoes might be enough.
A well fitted backpack and well fitting shoes/boots are your two bigger ticket items. Use the forum’s search function to find threads on how to fit a backpack...
The point of two stamps per day is to prove you walked. I think it is based on an assumption that people walk about 20-25 km per day and take about 5 days to cover that 100 km. If you are taking more time and walking only 5 km per day, then you would have about 20 stamps (if one per day over 100...
Please do post regularly. We will live somewhat vicariously through you during your walk and many here can offer daily advice about your route.
I’ve met the occasional pilgrim doing what you are doing - walking and then backtracking to collect your support vehicle. The pilgrim office will...
Try on a lot of different shoes. Go to the New Balance and MEC stores and ask for shoes in Wide and 2E width. I do best with shoes a half size larger but in 2E width.
In January and February, I find parking lots at shopping malls that have been cleared of snow, and I walk the perimeters. They...
I always start just before sunrise as I walk slowly. Pace yourself as you go, so you don’t expend all your energy before you get to the top. Stop for a rest and snack at Orrison and top up your water supply.
When you reach the other side of the hill and the final descent is before you, there...
The walk from SJPDP to Roncesvalles is walkable in a day. The vast majority do so. Start as early as possible, as watching the sun rise change the colours on the land is lovely.
If you have some inability to walk that far, Orrison is an option, or you can take two days to do the walk using the...
How often did you have to ring your bell? I have this vision of you flying down the path and walking pilgrims leaping out of your way.
Glad you had a safe trip.
I recall meeting a bicycle pilgrim on the route between Astorga and Rabanal. He had just reached the 3,000 km mark on his bike, and it was his 70th birthday.
So of course I shared my orange with him and sang happy birthday!
You can be as alone as you want, even on the Frances, and still have as much contact with others as you want. Lisbon to Porto can be fairly solitary.

No one can predict this. I walked in May and had 1 day of rain. My friend walked in May and had a lot of rain.
May brings flowers, storks and long hours of daylight.
Bring a poncho and a sense of adventure.
I think you’ll find that most of us who lurk here daily would happily do it anytime.
You need warm layers and a good rain system.
From Sarria, there will be an albergue frequently enough. There may be little to no heat, so a sleeping bag is needed. Carry some snacks during the day in case...
I’m curious about how this works.
Does the watch detect a fall and assume it’s automatically serious enough to warrant alerting emergency services?
What if you fall, but are able to get back up, dust yourself off and carry on? Would the watch have already alarmed everyone and set in motion a...
This is not true. While the volunteers in the Pilgrim Office may not enforce the two stamps per day rule for those who clearly walked a very long way, the rules do require two stamps per day for the last 100 km for walkers. Sometimes the rule is strictly enforced. Don’t risk it, get the stamps.
