As far as I know mobile phone coverage in Spain is generally good but if you get lost you may wander away from the good coverage too. An old trick may help: hold any long piece of metal (walking pole, tent pole, etc) flat against the back of your phone as an additional antenna. Just hold both...
For those walking Via de la Plata / Sanabria: there's a forest fire in Sierra de la Culebra. That's roughly the area between Zamora - Astorga and turn to Sanabria. Be safe.
I walked from SJPDP to Santiago-Finisterre-Muxia in 2015. There were lots of people and generally walking was safe. Started solo but in a few days found friends to walk together.
Still my walking buddies and me did take a bus over a stretch where a female pilgrim went missing that spring. On one...
To report you don't have to go anywhere or ask anybody to do it for you: just call 112 - the same police number all over EU. Emergency numbers are free. Works even if you don't have subscription. Do it immediately from a safe place around the corner, sit by a bar, sip your cafe latte, enjoy a...
I walked during the period when Denise was announced missing from the part between Astorga and Rabanal and the case wasn't solved yet. I did skip that part. So I can only tell what I saw from bus windows: I was so sorry I was not on that very beautiful path. And it didn't look dangerous per se...
Why would you reveal where your money stash is to somebody who wakes you up at 1-2a.m.? That was calculated - your brain will be mostly asleep and you do as you are told.
You all nice people from the West, you need to improve your English. There are a few words every *** will understand as...
-So what happens if you lose all your money?
-Then you don't have any money! :D:D:D
YES! So true! I will add this to my collection of wisdom!
Sure, no pilgrim would ever do this, but then there are tourigrinos and fake pilgrims too. The safest is to have all the money on you, always. Documents...
Sorry, Doug, but you are not a female, you are not in danger of being raped in broad daylight, you don't have those gut instincts that have saved many of us.
I'm sure this was no pilgrim: how many of us do have our cars handy at Finisterre? Local creep. And sure the police needs to know whats...
There were not so many albergues in Leon as you would expect in a big city. My impression of it was mostly of desperate looking pilgrims walking around and trying to find a place to stay. Sure there were hotels for 130 euros/person/night. I would advise to make a reservation.
My walking buddy and I had 2 incidents. One "flasher" (not sure any more where exactly), and one beggar masked as pilgrim followed us (before Triacastela, then 4 ladies walking together) and showed clear interest in our luggage, not ourselves. For that even being "old, fat and ugly" as someone...
