I’d second this strategy. Laurent is an amazing host and the albergue is clean and exceptionally well thought out. The communal dinner is a highlight, both for the meal itself and the folk you meet. Borda rocketed to my top five favourites last year.
I’ll second this: the walk out of Burgos has parkland and fields and is really quite lovely. I can take or leave the walk out of Leon (though I’ve never not walked it) but I wouldn’t miss Burgos.
I fly Qatar from Melbourne each Camino, and lately I’ve taken to a kind of reverse checking plan. I bought a $6 yoga mat bag from Kmart, put my poles, toiletry liquids, Swiss Army knife etc in it, and plastic wrap it (at home or airport). This bag gets checked, and they tend to mark it...
JC Rooms Santo Domingo is pretty cool, close to metro and supermercado and, frankly, the wonderful mercado San Miguel.., i think it’s both modern and charming.
I went to the OUI.sncf website on Monday (30 July) and was able to buy a ticket for the Bayonne - SJPP train on 29 September. Train times and the ability to book seem to come up about 60 days out, so if you’re looking for 5 October you should see your trains any day now. The site is in French...

I have three hours between designated landing time and the train, which should be enough (with only carry-on luggage) but the ten minute Bordeaux transfer seems tight... Interested in others’ experiences of it...
And to all on this list, I'd add lunch at the Mercado de San Miguel, a fabulous old building now filled with multitudes of tiny stalls selling amazing tapas. It's less than a ten minute walk from the royal palace and very worth an hour of your time!
I did this in April: flew into Paris CDG, spent a day or so there and then caught the night train from Paris (Gare d'Austerlitz) to Madrid. Got off this train at Vitoria Gasteiz- at around 4:30 am - but as a solo female traveller, I felt safe and the cafe opened for breakfast just after 6am -...
