I'm 79 as well and at this age, I'd not travel without insurance.
Small things can suddenly turn into big things.
Certainly, get medical with a good evacuation coverage.
A friend got very ill in Italy and it cost her over $40,000 to be medivaced back to the US!
I've used it only twice in all my...
Here's some advice Re:Samos: take your time.
From Tricastela to Samos is one of the most beautiful trails on the CF.
The one from Samos to Sarria is almost as beautiful and so varied it's amazing.
Don't bus from Samos to Sarria!
You'll miss the forest trails, gorgeous little farms and lovely...
I stayed at the Airport Hilton and was very pleased with the service. I intended on one night, but tested positive for Covid and had to wait 5 days! They took excellent care of me (even cheered when I tested negative and rushed me to the airport to get official clearance!) Their breakfast buffet...
I've used Correos to ship forward. I send a 2nd pair of shoes and socks to a prearranged hotel in Leon from Madrid, when I did the CF from SJPdP.
It worked great. I also sent my little travel case to Ivars storage place from a Madrid...it was there when I finished a month later.
Correos is...
Use the train from SdeC to Madrid.
There are several sites for purchasing tickets. If you fail on one, go to another.
I got stuck with Covid and couldn't travel home until I tested negative. Once I did, I hurriedly searched for a train ticket. Found one on my third site. 10 minutes later there...
Madrid fromUSA has always been a good choice for me.
1. It's easy to get to Pamplona or any starting point in Spain from there.
2. I overnight in Pamplona if going toSJPDP and take the morning bus and then can walk up to Orrison that same day.
3. I can get a morning train from SdeC to Madrid...
Go to Washington Dulles (IAD) and take the overnight flight to Madrid from there.
Good timing there and rare to have flights in or out delayed (too many government "officials" use it) 😂
US flights to Madrid usually arrive early 8-9:00 AM. Take the train to Pamplona that morning (buy online ticket). Using that ticket, you get a free computer train ticket to Atocha Ststion (from Terminal T4), where you can get the Pamplona train. To avoid jet lag/fatigue, spend the night in...
In May all I needed was a recent Covid test (negative) and the Spanish Travel QR code on my phone (I carried a paper copy too).

I recommend booking early and using Omio. I recently tried booking a next day train: Renfe (impossible), Trainline (timed out), but Omio went through with credit card. Later, I checked for an earlier train and ALL were completely booked.
So, get distance tickets in advance.
The exception is...
There is a good train from SdeC to Madrid. A couple of times a day. I took it back in October. Good ride. There is one transfer shortly after SdeC, but you just step off one and onto another...same platform. Check again.
Took the 9:30 AM to Madrid-Chamartin from Santiago on Oct 27th this fall.
I had one transfer at Ourense which was a snap.
5 hours total.
Then took the commuter train to from Chamartin to Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Easy and fast.
Im a bit late to this discussion, but here's my notes on getting to SJPDP from Madrid Airport (note:this is for a US to Spain flight):
To the Train in the airport:
1. Proceed to Floor 1 "Departures" and take the free shuttle bus to Terminal T4. You arrive at T4 in 10 minutes on Floor 0... 30...
Thanks,Laurie! I have about 4 hours if my flight arrives on time to catch my train to Pamplona. This info is good. Looks like I should have time even if I'm a bit late or have a bag to pickup.
Really can't wait to get going!
I've read that if I have a long distance train ticket (e.g. mine from Madrid to Pamplona), I can ride from Madrid Barajas Airport to Atocha Train Station free.
That is, I can use my Pamplona ticket to go to the station.
Does anyone know if this is true? Experience?
This is great advice and I'm taking it! Staying overnight in Pamplona (with a hostal room-hey, it's "pre-Camino"), getting up late, bussing to SJPP and staying in Orisson. Slow start for this Ole Guy!
