Is it easier just to fly to Madrid to start the Frances?
I had that same thought in 2018. BIG mistake. Getting from madrid to sjpdp is very difficult. from madrid you need to fly to pamplona, then bus to france. Go direct to france. Trust me!- Jackieduda

How to get from Madrid to St Jean-Pied-du-Port?
I had a most expensive lesson trying to figure this out AFTER i had set other plans in stone. My advice: figure out the bus schedule from madrid to pamplona, then from pamplona to st jean before anything else, then work around those dates to get to madrid. I walked the Frances beginning in SJPDP in sept last year. By october, weather was still mild but it was colder in the mornings. (It will also be dark for about the first hour or more of your daily hike.). No problem if you bring a lightweight puffy jacket you can scrunch up in your backpack...- Jackieduda

Getting to SJPDP from the US
Either way you do it, it isnt likely to be a short list of connections from the U.S. to there. Please dont do what i did...made a reservation to madrid, then tried to figure out the rest...instead, study all of the transportation carefully before you make any reservations that are set in stone...- Jackieduda
