Get a city map and walk the perimeter of Madrid or as much as you are comfortable with. On our recent 3 day break in Madrid we walked the west half and the following day we walked the eastern half. Taking in most of the sights.

It looks like you can purchase a Tarjeta Dorado for one year on-line. It gives you the 1, 2 or 3 year option.
Separately, can you use a digital card or do you need a physical card.
I have taken my 38l Osprey Kestrel on 5 flights, 3 with Ryanair with no issues taking it into the cabin. I’ve always prepared to pay for it, as I want it with me, if challenged at the gate.

That’s a good question raised by the OP. I couldn’t imagine knowing what day I would finish the Camino and whether or not to cont to the coast, so I assumed I would buy a one way ticket only. I didn’t realise this could be an issue. i would fly into France and be out in a few days.
