Back in 1978 I took a train across Montana, the train to Madrid was about as speedy. If you have been to Japan or taken the bullet trains from London to Paris don't expect those types of speed in Spain. No need to pre-book just get a ticket a day or two before you head to Barcelona. It is a 15...
If you stay at a hotel they will help arrange a Taxi. The bus I am not sure of their hours but you can walk to the station easily & ask. You can also find a taxi easily the day before & ask one of the drivers for a phone# They are all use to the multitudes of pilgrims who share your need. Once...
What I did was used cheapoair to book to Paris caught a shuttle bus from Charles De Gaule to Orly, Then flew to Biarritz. Then a pre arraigned shuttle to St John. Search using the largest airport you will begin, then to Biarritz then 42 days for the time line & train/bus or fly to Madrid then...
Were you staying in a hostel? My motel in the center was €85 a night I thought that was a deal! It ended up ideal to visit the Prada, palace ect. But not exactly a quiet spot after the Camino.
Did you have any time in Madrid or did you hang around Santiago when you were done? I also have thought too look & see if there are Direct flights back to Paris.
I took the train, I was supprised that it went slow as it did compared to French rail, but very similar to the rail in Montana. I had 5 days in Madrid to explore but it was the most expensive part of the trip. I will explore the islands you can ferry to if I have that amount of time again.
Lol thanks for the research :)
I must say though my visit was before the bombings in Paris & Brussels. If security has tightened up especially in the outer perimeters of the airport terminals that alone will slow the movement of passengers & busses. Once again if you are concerned with your...
I must have as is was not a slow trip. The fellow Lonestar who followed the next day also made it thru with no issues. I have heard others on the site mention traffic issues but most of them went into Paris proper to catch a train. I can only relate my experience. If it is a concern then...
I had 2hrs from the time I landed to the time I was on the bus was 30 minutes but I had studied the airport map very closely. I also had no delay going thru customs. 45 minutes later I was at Orly, then checked my bag & walked to my gate. I had also studied that airport map so I had a general...
I think if he gets lucky & gets his ticket & does not have to wait long for the next bus he should be fine. Once arriving at Orly the biggest obstical was my lack of French. Persistence pays off
Here is a better directions I wrote the day I arrived for a fellow flying in behind me
Lonestar put your pack in a duffle something you can toss when you get to St Jean. I am glad I had my duffle was torn up. Once you get out side last thing you do is get your checked bag after customs. When...
Yes it will, you will collect your bag on your way out once you see the out side stay inside & follow the hall that parallels the street out side to the right look for the busses at signs start looking for the kiosk to pay for the ticket. Then match the # to the sign. Board & go.
Welcome to the forum Joe!
I think Annie response is good, but really funds may dictate a persons route in as well. I think for simplicity of flight Madrid is an idea. The issue many of us discover is that there really no start point or route that should be the primary. As it is the simple...
I took the train, but has anyone once arriving in Santiago then gotten a ticket to fly to Madrid without prior reservations? I ask because it is very difficult to determine when a person will arrive in Santiago. Most of us pad extra days on our departure flights back to our home countries, so my...

I am a year post Camino, I simply figured I would figure it out, my Spanish is very bad, but when I returned from my walk to the ocean I asked at the pilgrim office & was informed of the train office right next to the place you get the compestella. When walking out of the courtyard...
If you make it to Santiago the train ride is a full day so try to get an early ticket, you can walk from the cathedral about 20 minutes or catch a cab. Next to were you get your compostella there is a ticket office for the train. Madrid is huge so it will be a taxi or metro back to the airport...
