When coming and going from the Camino, I usually stay in Madrid at the Urban Sea Atocha 113, located on Atocha Street at #113. It is a simple, but clean and friendly hotel, and reasonably priced, considering the location. It is a short walk uphill to the Plaza Mayor and an even shorter walk...
I have always stayed a the Urban Sea Hotel at Atocha 113 when arriving in and departing from Madrid. It has always been clean, friendly, and convenient - only a 10 min. walk to the Atocha Train station.
Thank you for your post - very interesting!
I was especially interested in your comment re speed:
As soon as I pull over to the right lane, the car would pass us like we were standing still. I would estimate some were passing at 150-175.
A few years ago on the camino, a friend and I decided to...
I have always stayed at the Urban Sea Atocha 113, which is coincidentally located on Atocha #113, just a very short walk up Calle Atocha from the Atocha train station. It is a simple, clean, friendly hotel - in the $70-$85/night range
(US $, I assume), and a ~10 minute walk up Calle Atocha to...
A few years ago, I wanted to start in SJPdP but I don’t like riding buses in the mountains so didn’t want to take a bus from Pamplona to Saint Jean. I flew from Toronto overnight to Paris, then I took a train from the airport to Dax, stayed overnight at a nice little hotel close to the train...
I would fly from Toronto on an Air Canada direct flight to Madrid and take the train to Sarria. You could stay a night or two in Madrid to get over jetlag or take an extra day in Sarria before you start walking. It is easy to connect to the train from the airport in Barajas.
Mary Lynn...
I am so glad that everything is going smoothly after your initial panic over missing documents and I hope your long flight to Madrid is relaxing and uneventful. Looking forward to updates.
You might consider starting your Camino two days before SJPdP on the LePuy Camino. I have done this twice and it makes a nice 'warm-up' to the Pyrenees. From the CdG airport in Paris, I took the TGV to Dax, spent the night at the friendly, family-run O'Petit Hotel (~10min walk from train...
Stay excited! In my experience, the first few days--leaving home, the flight, getting to SJPP, and beginning the walk up a mountain--are the hardest and most stressful of the whole Camino. You will be surprised how many people will happily point you and your mom in the right direction and...
Twice I have started walking on my Camino in St. Palais with easy connections from Toronto to Paris CdG, TGV to Dax, overnight at O Petit Hotel, bus to St. Palais, and an easy 2-day walk to St.Jean. It's a very nice 'warm-up' to the Pyrenees through beautiful agricultural landscapes on the GR65.
I usually have flown into Madrid from Toronto, then taken the airport shuttle bus to the Atocha station (about 30min ride, 5E), and stayed at Urban Sea 113Atocha (that's the name of the hotel) at 113 Atocha, less than a ten-minute walk from the Atocha Station. Next day or two later, I have...
On one of my trips, it was o.k. to carry the pack and my one pole on board as long as the pole had a rubber tip. The pole was going to be strapped onto the outside of my pack and under the rain cover. Seemed like a strange level of security.
My Danish Camino-friend and I had an interesting adventure with Vueling in July 2013 when our early morning flight from Pamplona to Copenhagen via Barcelona was cancelled. We were notified by cell phone on the evening before the flight that it cancelled and that we were automatically re-booked...
Yes, I was just going to say that I love my travel agent, and I would never book a trip on my own, not just to ensure accuracy or to feel secure, but he always finds me the best price and routing. Apparently if there is a problem and passengers have a layover and/or have to be re-routed, those...
Hi, Margie, I haven't had to deal with a late arrival, but I have flown in and/or out of Madrid several times and each time I have stayed at the Urban Sea Hotel Atocha 113 (that is also the address: Atocha 113). It is a ~seven minute walk from the Atocha train station. It used to be part of...
Thank you so much for your quick reply! I will Google the addresses and print out maps. I got turned around once in the Plaza Mayor and it took me an hour to find my way back to Calle Atocha! I appreciate your help!
Hello, KinkyOne, Could you tell me more specifically where to get the credencial in Madrid? I will arrive in Madrid next week on May 26 and my hotel (Urban Sea Atocha113) is near the train station. I had planned to get my credencial the next day in Pamplona, but it might be nice to get it...
I agree! I have stayed there at least four times, and will be there again in early November at the end of my Camino. However, Chic and Basic apparently has been sold and is now run under the name Urban Sea Hotel Atocha 113. The pictures on the website look exactly like the C&B that I...
NO! Do not miss the meseta...it can be as (or more) beautiful than any other section of the Camino. Start in Pamplona, take a bus from Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon to save almost a day's walk through the least interesting part of the Camino (to me)...whatever...but do not miss the meseta...
