An option that requires some confidence is to approach others who have come off your flight carrying backpacks. Mention that you were about to order an Uber and did they care to share the ride? They may inform how they are proceeding and to where. Then you have an option to join with them, build...
1) If there is concern about plane delays, wait till you arrive in Paris to purchase the ticket at the Station, (Gare). When I did this leg of the trip, I stayed in a hostel near the Gare Montparnasse. I got there by bus from the airport, direct. Next morning, I walked to the station, 2 or 3...
This is an option.
Walk out the airport doors, find three others who are headed to SJPP (they all have backpacks), and share a taxi to SJPP. The cost of the refunded train ticket will likely cover a share of the taxi and yoiu will be in SJPP in an hour.
I have done it and made three new...
One thought. If the pack dimensions are greater than the allowed dimensions, perhaps there is too much in the pack? I have also used an 42 L Osprey pack and always was allowed to carry it on. The first time it contained 20 lb of items. The second time, just 10 lb. Both pack weights did not...
I can only advise based on my personal experience. I May, 2018, I flew into Charles DeGaul Airport and took a dedicated bus to Montparnasse Station in the South end of Paris. I did have to stay overnight in a hostel due to timing but I took a train to Bayonne and then completed the trip by bus...
I did take a train from Logroño, as I had damaged the quad muscles in my left leg. It was an overnight sleeper and at the time cost 63 euro. So, like a bed and a non-stop taxi for one price.
Once in SdC, I stayed a couple of days at the Hotel Capital de Galicia. Beautiful little hotel with pink...
I have been there in both May and August and there were no trains to SJPdP. Luckily, the taxis were just outside the front door of the airport, as they usually are, and were the transfer with the least hassle and the least amount of time taken to get there.
I grabbed a cab, asked three others with backpacks if they wanted to share the cab and in an hour we were all in SJPdP. Not sure what the cost is today. Still, the cost can be split 4 ways.
DeGaul to Montparnasse (still in Paris) then to Bayonne then a final train to SJPdP, if it is still running, if not then by bus to destination.
For me, however, was to fly into Biarritz and taxi to SJPdP with 3 other Peregrinos, (new friends).
If flying into Biarritz, walk out of the airport, find 3 more people with backpacks and hire a taxi for the 1 hour drive. Split the fare 4 ways and meet the first 3 new friends made on your pilgrimage.
Do your best to book flights in and out of major hubs. In my instance, I will fly out of Toronto or Montreal to Dublin, then to Biarritz. On the way home, Santiago to Dublin then home on best priced and timed flight.
Simplest way to SJPP from Biarritz Airport is to walk out the front door, find a cab that will take you to SJPP and then find 3 more people carrying backpacks. Ask if they care to split the fare. It takes me less than 5 minutes to fill the cab. Plus, you get to meet and chat with 3 new friends...
I have used an Osprey Kestrel 40L till now but will be going forward with a Gobi Gear;
30L Free Spirit Travel Backpack
https://gobi-gear.myshopify.com/products/free-spirit-backpack
WIth the size of this pack, it reduces not only what can be carried but weighs next to nothing itself, and still...
