Interesting. I bought a replica Templar dagger in Toledo and had it in my carry-on bag on the train back to Madrid. No problem, even though it was pretty lethal looking.
Agree. And there is that great tapas emporium just by the Plaza Mayor. Hot tip: if you are an early riser you will not fin many restaurants or coffee shops open. However, McDonalds will be open. I'll never turn up my snooty nose at the arches again. When you need that first cup of joe it's a...
Oops! Tripped up by senility again. I recall now taking that train a couple of years ago. The route included a slow, winding descent into Ourense before going back up to the main line and continuing to Lugo. We got off in Ourense so didn't do the last leg.
I read an account one time (on the interwebs so it must be true!) about some guy who wanted his social security number tattooed on the back of his neck as a statement of modern nameless reality. When scanned he discovered it said "$24.99." He should probably start worrying about his "sell by" date.
At the ripe old age of 75, therefore with more money left than time on earth (though not much of either), my wife and I have decided to squander the kids' inheritance on business class flights. We suffered enough through many, many years of economy class transpacific flights usually taking 24...
My go-to resource now is Google flights. It is infinitely flexible as far as destinations and dates. You can either designate a specific destination -- for example Madrid -- or a whole country or just a geographic region such as Europe or South America. You have to first put in specific dates...
At this early juncture in the international vaccination campaign it's hard to predict when new regulations will come or what they will be. I'm watching the space pretty carefully, though, and expect before long countries will begin to adjust their travel bans to accommodate vaccinated travelers...
Sorry if I gave the impression that I was responding directly to your original question -- I had read so many replies by the time I responded I was thinking more of suggestions for travel directly from from the airport and/or ways to get to Sarria quickly. Though to be fair you did respond...
We took the train to Sarria, and always choose rail travel when available. Comfortable ride, nice scenery, snacks and beer -- what's not to like? But I also question why someone coming from far away doesn't spend a couple of days in Madrid to rest up and see the sights. What's the rush?
I flew into San Sebastian, which is about the best place in the world to start a visit to Spain. After a couple of days stuffing my face with pintxos I took the morning train to SJPdP (which also makes a stop in Irun/Biarritz). If you do this it will be more convenient to stay overnight in...
Renfe from Santiago to Madrid is about 6 hours, IIRC, even with the transfer at Ourense. Given the fact that you don't have to take a taxi to the airport an hour or two early to be sure to get through security, etc. , there isn't THAT much difference in time. And it's a hell of a lot cheaper...
When I was looking into this I found that Friday/weekend flights went up spectacularly in cost compared to mid-week. Since we were leaving Santiago last Friday (May 3) we took the train instead, Santiago to Ourense, then transfer to another train to Madrid Chamartin. One advantage to taking the...
I flew into Madrid and then caught a cheap internal flight to San Sebastian. From there you can take a train to SJPdP. San Sebastian is a great place to spend a few days to acclimate to time zone changes, but be careful of the fabulous pintxo bars because you don't want to start your walk as the...
