An Exhibition on Kumano Kodo in SdC

The exhibition is well worth seeing if you are lucky enough to be in Santiago before the end of April. There are about 40 large photographs with accompanying Spanish and English explanations by Luis Gago and Aoife Nin Dhubhda. If you see it you will want to walk the Kumano Kodo too! Here are...

An Exhibition on Kumano Kodo in SdC

Great to hear about this exhibition! As luck would have it, I’m heading off to walk part of the Frances starting tomorrow and I’ll be in Santiago at the end of the month. So excited to be able to be out walking again! I’m looking forward to seeing the exhibition — I walked the Kumano Kodo in...

    Kumano Kodo Trip Report

I found it safe but a very solitary experience. I went off season, in February, and rarely encountered anyone else during the day. Since much of the terrain is heavily forested (and steep!) the thought of how I would deal with an injury on the trail did concern me as there was just no one else...

LIVE from the Camino Camino kodo- Japan day 1

The Nakahechi Route is possible in February — I had cold, frosty, dry days on my walk. It was extremely quiet though and I did not see any other walkers aside from a deer in the forest, standing ahead of me on the path. The lady at the minshuku that night said that it was very good luck...

    Kumano Kodo questions

Is there any place where one can store luggage? Rather than store luggage and return to Tanabe I used this package/luggage forwarding service when walking the Kumano Kodo. I was able to drop off my extra things at a 7-11 type store in Tanabe and it was transported within 24 hours to my...

Camink in Japan Kumano Kundo in April

Hi Youren, I walked the Kumano Kodo last February and am now on the Via de la Plata. I choose to walk in Japan in February largely because of the weather as although it was cold I avoided the rain. The Kii Peninsula has its own microclimate and the heavier rains begin in April. See this...

Kumano Kodo & Camino Frances 'dual pilgrim'

Lucky you! October will be a lovely time to be walking the Kumano Kodo with the beginning of the fall colours and cooler temperatures. I walked it in February of this year. It was pretty cold but a fabulous experience nevertheless, and received the Dual Pilgrim certificate after presenting...

    Kumano Kodo 2017

Hi Mark, I enjoyed the solitary aspect of the Kumano Kodo but I also loved walking the Frances in 2014 and meeting people from all over the world. Without doubt, there are people planning, dreaming, and preparing to walk that will all come together to join you in September. I like to think of...

    Kumano Kodo 2017

There are snakes in that area and I almost stepped on one that was sunning itself on the path. Luckily it was not a Japanese Pit Viper, which are venomous. Although unlikely, it is also possible to encounter bears on the more remote sections such as the Kohechi route from Koyasan to Hongu Taisha.

    Kumano Kodo 2017

Generally you will not have any problems getting around or dealing with day to day things such as buying train tickets, etc. Inevitably someone will speak a bit of English. The Japanese are very organised and have made a real effort to smooth the way for foreign visitors so don't let fears of...

    Kumano Kodo 2017

Yes, the Kumano-travel.com is an excellent resource for planning your trip. They really have thought of everything and their staff in Tanabe and Hongu speak English and are very helpful. Although the Kumano Kodo and the Camino share a thousand years of pilgrimage tradition they are very, very...

    Kumano Kodo 2017

Hello Julia-T, You have some very good events planned to mark your 60th birthday! I wish you success with the completion of your Camino in April and hope that you will be able to walk the Kumano Kodo as well. My suggestion would be to plan for October, November, or even the first part of...

    Kumano Kodo 2017

Hello fellow pilgrims, Firstly, a very big thank you to all those who make this forum possible! A couple of years ago I came across some information here about the Kumano Kodo in Japan and from that moment on it was on my list of walks to do. Finally, everything came together and I was able to...
