Hi Bill & Joel
I am half way through Norte, will return in early to do the next stage (Llanes to La Caridad). My view is that the Norte is doable but the first week or so from Irun to Bilbao I found exceedingly hard work. I would agree it was the toughest walking I have done - take the toughest...
What wonderful photos - I walked those stretches this April and September. I took the coastal option from Castro Urdiales to Laredo and the weather was horrendous. Mild but gales and horizontal rain all the way. And cattle that wouldn'tmove from the path!!! It looks amazing in the sun.
thank you...
I'll be walking again from Llanes to Luarca at the start of April. I'm going to get a bus between Gijon to Aviles, it will be a first but from reading the descriptions of that stage I don't mind.
Thanks all the continued input on this site and Happy New Year.
Roll on April
Hi Kathryn,
6-7 days is definitely possible - I walked it in 6 days in mid-April and averaged 25.5km a day (like you I averaged 30km on the Camino Frances) but the terrain makes it the toughest walking I've done so far.
As others have said the weather is the thing. In April there was still a...
Hello Thornley,
That seems doable - depending on your pace still a 6-9 hour day. I did Gernika-Bilbao in one day which seems similiar in ascent/distance.
If you are starting in Igeldo you will miss the steep climb out of San Sebastian though there is still another one out of Zarautz / Getaria...
I have just completed this part of the Norte from Irun to Castro-Urdiales. Now in Bilbao waiting to fly home tomorrow.
From Zarautz to Deba was the hardest stretch of walking i've ever done.
I walked the coastal route to Getaria which was pleasant and easy. Outside Zumaia you are given a...
Many thanks Rajy - your stages look over the first 11 days are pretty much the same as mine, I may try for Santander on day 10 but this will be dependent on knees / weather etc. May take the walking poles this time.

Hi Arthur , thanks for reply.
That view is sensational ! Reminds me of Foncebaddon-Molinaseca from the CF. I don't remember any sections on the CF or CP where I thought it was overly dangerous. Traffic I suppose but that is an ever present on any camino. My concern was terrain combined with...
Thank you all for the replies - it doesn't sound as bad as I had thought. I'll be careful around El Brusco
And thankyou Kurt for the reference to guide. Many Spanish is average but the maps look really useful, I will order a copy.
Hi All,
Am booked up and starting the Norte from Irun in mid-April. I have trawled around previous threads looking for posts on sections that might be prone to be muddy but have read some comments suggesting some sections were considered downright dangerous ?
I'm fit, healthy, wont be carrying...
Thanks Joe.
I saw after these questions have lready been asked and answred elsewhere on the forum. My plan is still to go mid April-ish and whatever weather comes. My only real concern was accomodation. Looking at the change in elevations I may not get as far as Santander but we'll see, will...
Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere. I plan to begin walking the Norte in April - I have 12 days so aim to walk Irun to Santander if possible, a little shorter if needed.
Am I right in assuming weather related problems are likely to be wind and rain rather than snow now?
And...
