It’s a blessing walking this early…..Ultreia!!
((And moderators…..this is not selfpromotion but sharing of valued memories….have some consideration please…))
Definately from Irùn....no question....my choice..?.....no planned skips and let fortuna unfold your journey.....if to do it over I would fly into Paris and take the train down
((There is also a special train route parallel with the coast ....I was on foot all the way so have no experience...
“Buen Camino” “Northern Route”
Works a treat and worth it.....used ordinary guidebook also to read up and deviate from time to time...it pays off to put some question marks for route a head....just looking at the map it was quite easy to find tempting detours.....”it’s your camino..”
“GR E9” ...
So when you hit FIRST roundabout entering Gernika ......the youth hostel is down on your right some hundred meters or so.... there is a local bakery close....think you can pre book. This is a good resting ground with a good kitchen to prepare some grub. Go for it!
Enjoy your Camino on your own tempo.....forget warnings...you will both have a blast
Regards from Norway and one that will return to El Norte ones...

Glad you are motivated.....going parallell to a thundering coastline is something else
No cycling......juuuust walking
18 days it took.....in december....out of season ....with absolutely zilch worries around housing....that explains average 10 km's more pr day in my experience
It's not...
Had this tune from artist named Machinedrum stuck in my head before I left....impressions of scenery put to use....just to give some ample taste of what it's like in december...
I understand why one could get confused when reading different understanding/experience.
I've done Frances & El Norte. They differ of course but are the same. Both can challenge but we are as pilgrims on equal terms walking one or the other.
We all can do all, on our own terms.
I just loved...
Doing El Norte this december, I ended up with full use of the app "Buen Camino"......leaving in the dark mornings...?......most helpful to give me peace of mind when "lost".......works a treat
((SAN Sebastian airport provided a small/compact guide from 2012 for free...enjoyed the maps aswell))...
Of course ...I totally agree..as everything written on this forum is up for personal choice/preference...and I take for granted that moderators also have that in mind when commenting. Just to, again, state the obvious...
My advice is of a physical nature. Depending on experience is one...
If possible-avoid bitumen.
There is also a alpine variant out of Irun---in nice weather that would bee a fantastic highland start for your walk.
Buen Camino !
Anyone can do El Norte to "their Camino" nowadays. Number albuerges are growing and I see great future for this route. To experience the true forces of the atlantic ocean up close is not to bee missed. Forces on communtities and nature also of equally importance....
Go for it...
Thx Arn....appriciate your words.
No severe cold....just me having just a very light windbreaker and vest as outer garment. Better gloves and jacket....?.....supertrooper!! (And cold means high preassure and clear sky, so naturewise it was a bliss for the eyes...)
.....as I finished 1/1-17. Just got home.
Met 14 pilegrims in total, which 4 appeared on my last night before Santigo, at Sobrado dos Moxes. 2 going opposite way. Know the name on 5. Free spirits!! Walked solo minus 1,5 day with very good company .
Froze a lot last week. My stupidity sending...
There are issues......most importantly you benefit from hard contacts before arrival.....lot's of closed options I am afraid ....all over.....
Met 6 peregrinos in total ......two the opposite way of me......but who's complaining ...I am walking!
Best regards from Bo
