Loved Irun to Bilbao but did bus in the last day to Bilbao from suburbs and subway to Portugalate on way out of town to avoid suburban walking.
The Camino is weird - you can have a great day of walking and thinking on the drabbest of stages and miserable day on the most beautiful.
I plan to redo Irun to Bilbao - we loved the countryside, the people, everything. Plus it will make you stronger for the rest of the route.
We had a small Camino family that we met often despite rest days side trips etc.
Hope you have fun.
We walked from Irun to Santiago via Norte then Primitivo in about 30 days. We had long days coupled with rest days in Bilbao, Santander, Oviedo and Lugo but would have been better with shorter days and less rest.
Hotel Los Angeles in Santillana had a couple of rooms with patio overlooking park in front that we enjoyed.
We also had some rest days in Llanes that were terrific
We did Norte/Primitivo for our 50th birthday in 2016. I planned first week badly - links to blog under my username- and this meant some stupidly difficult days ie 42km stage from Zumaia over two small ranges etc.
But even with that we managed. Going back next Spring to walk some of Voie...
All good suggestions but I loved Irun and first couple of weeks in Basque Country and Cantabria. Also loved the Primitivo and if getting to Santiago is important to you then it’s doable
It was our first Camino in 2016 so no comparables. Seemed well marked had Buen Camino as backup with downloaded map.
Once missed a turn and had to backtrack a bit but if I recall we were distracted that day and perhaps not poor markings.
there are handy folding Bluetooth keyboards that can turn a larger phone into a better tool for blogger.
Carry what you want - try to keep to 10% of body weight
You might consider starting in France and walking The Voie Litoralle (coastal route) from Soulac sur Mer to Irun.
Please do and write about it as we are doing this route then on to Bilbao spring 2020 as a partial encore to our 2016 Norte/Primitivo.
Yes, we practiced with poles - mostly when we were doing hilly walks - my wife had a pretty gimpy knee and poles - and knowing how to use - were a big help.
To reiterate just practicing being upright for 6 hours a day - consecutive days are good practice- is a big help.
Shorten up your stages...
We used booking.com for most of time on Norte - but as switched over to Primitivo many hotels in my Buen Camino App were not avail except through their websites. Google translate helped draft emails and responses were prompt to reservation requests.
We had booked our first week and filled in a week ahead on rest days when we got better feel for how much waking was best for us balanced with our time constraint.
we live in pretty flat place so did lots of distance.
Also use poles - because they are big help up and especially down and good to be comfortable with before you go.
We didn’t carry packs much in training except right before we were going - I thought time on pegs was more important than full...
Irun to Bilbao was probably our favourite stretch of our Norte / Primitivo - we are goin back next year to to do some of Voie Littorale and then Irun fininishin in Bilbao. It justifies a redo.
I had planned this stretch willfully ignoring geography and pretty much mucked it all up - our blog...
We flew to Bilbao. Short bus ride to San Sebastián land then there is light rail that gets 200m from the bridge to France. We overnighted is SS before and after Irun to acclimatize
