May/June/July Norte experiences re: weather, etc.

One other thought: if you are walking the June&July time frame that might land you in SdC on a Holy Year around the feast of St James, which depending on your outlook could be a good or bad thing…and in any case will need some planning for lodging. Buen Camino!!!

May/June/July Norte experiences re: weather, etc.

I walked the Norte to Oviedo late April to Mid May, popped down to the Frances for awhile, then Primitivo late May to early June (for reference point Hospitales 1 June). It rained almost every day (I’m unlucky but did have good rain gear) on the Norte but only in April did it seem heavy and/or...

    Walking Norte to Primitivo

This one I did go in and second your advice!

    Walking Norte to Primitivo

I only went outside the gugenhiem. I'm also simple minded. but i was fascinated by the giant spider. something for everyone!

    Walking Norte to Primitivo

I also walked Gernika to Bilbao. I don’t understand why gronze breaks 30ish km into two stages unless it was to give you extra time to explore Bilbao, but I took a break day in Bilbao to do that (to see churches and museum, and mail some things ahead at the post office). Buen Camino!

    Norte halfway point

Ooh, we could make a betting pool! I think there are so many variations on the Norte (variations to the coast, to ermitas, ways out of cities, boat or overland, on the beach or the promenade, over the hill or around it, etc , what counts as the start city, did you deviate to Valdedios or Oviedo...

    Norte halfway point

Not sure what to make the halfway, 400 at llanes is further than I get from Irun to llanes using gronze but as @amancio notes there are many variant routes. If I use gronze and @amancio logged distance, about halfway would be sebrayo which would be 434 or Pernus at 428, found in the Collunga to...

    Norte halfway point

Google says 865km. So 433ish I guess. I’ll do so adding of stages and come back. If those numbers are accurate it would be just after Ribadesella Edit: did you start in Irun?

LIVE from the Camino Norte vs Frances - Yikes!

Dragging the thread back to topic, I agree it was a shock to the system walking Norte to Primitivo to OMG-where-did-all-these-people-come-from!!??!! OTOH all of a sudden food and beds were mere Km from each other and I spent only two nights with the crowd (Arzua and Monte de Gozo, and could...

LIVE from the Camino Norte vs Frances - Yikes!

OTOH IMO being a pilgrim means self examination not examination and judgment of others. Anyone with enough energy to inventory what others have packed or how their packs have traveled may want to walk a few extra km

to paraphrase Clemenza: eat the scallops, take the shell...

    Shell in Irun

I don’t know but if no one else does, I have two suggestions: ask around once you get there (at your hotel/albergue etc) or buy a shell before you leave (if you have time and can find one). I tend to be rough on my equipment so I bought a pewter scallop shell before I left for my pack (survived...

    Del Norte in 3 weeks

For me my must do’s: Bilbao, bufones de pria, zennaruza monastery (but that’s based on the fun I had there which isn’t guaranteed), Markina (but only because of the nearby chapel of St Michael), comillas (because I was on a Gaudi Camino) you picked a great Camino Buen Camino!

LIVE from the Camino Accommodation experience, first 8 nights

So Zenarruza is open? It was my favorite on the Norte (for ambiance not luxury but I hear it’s been improved). I know everyone says Guermes but I hated that one, even more than the hostel in Guernica. sounds like you’ve figured out housing! Not an easy feat on the Norte at high season during a...

feve train and camino del norte

From personal experience I can say that any advice given by Tia Valeria is priceless and wise people take it to heart. I hadn’t even consider parking ahead. What a great idea!

    Expensive Accommodations!

I think that’s a little unfair to the Norte. There were several albergues when I walked years ago, and reading here it sounds like more cropped up in the years after, but they appear to be closed due to covid. Many things aren’t what they usually are right now

First time / Del Norte August 11 / Simple question

Along with all the other places mentioned, I got mine stamped at a tourist information kiosk when I couldn’t find anyplace else nearby. I also was worried before starting about how I’d find someone, after a couple of days I only worried if there was a particular sello I wanted. I’d always get...

    Expensive Accommodations!

I didn’t have covid or Spanish vacation season to work around, but sometimes I’d walk extra past the usual stop spot but not far enough to reach the next. I often got deals just dragging my forlorn pilgrim self into roadside hotels (probably truck stop equivalents) looking exhausted with my...
  19. Smallest_Sparrow

    Expensive Accommodations!

Based on my spring experience prices dropped from Zarutz onward and there were more albergue options (again not sure bc of covid). You may want to invest some time on gronze or other pilgrim site of your choice, call ahead and see if albergues are open or see if the hotels have pilgrim prices...

    Expensive Accommodations!

You’re traveling through a prime vacation area at a very busy vacation time. I hope it gets better, I know further on there were more albergues but I don’t know if they’re open during covid. The first few steps were more expensive as I recall but I also walked in April. Are you using gronze.com...
