Thanks Tel,
Are you a relative of uncle Pepe?
Yes the web item does show St Estaban de Leces, which is where we stayed earlier, but this web site shows it at Abeo. See http://todosloscaminosdesantiago.com/ca ... te-etapa18. Blew up the google map and then checked location on google earth and...
In 2005 I stayed at a pilgrims hostel at St Estoban de Leces, a bit west of Ribadesella. Cannot find any current details. Is it still there? Or has it been replaced by another at Abeo? or is Abeo the same as St Estaban?
Will be there in 3 weeks time so need a place to stay for 4 people.
Hi George,
I do both, in fact my "road bike" is just a Specialised Rock Hopper to which I fitted Schwalbe, Marathon 26 x 1.5 road tyres. Whilst not best suited to mud plugging they are fast on tarmac and adequate on much of the off-road camino. Except after long and heavy rain!
"Awesome downhill...
Large sections of the main Caminos are on road, so you have no option but to stick on tarmac! The Norte is no exception.
In 2005 we did all the Norte on road. We were on road bikes, not mountain bikes. There are some off-road sections which can be ridden on a road bike (all and where are...
Hi George,
Also biking the Norte route, but Santander/Finisterra, and back via Primitivo, 3 weeks in July/Aug.
Have had some postings recently which might be of use, inc some places to visit.
Hello again Rachael,
In 2005 we flew Stansted, England to Santander and flew back from Santiago. This...
Hi John,
I see that you have already received some useful advice. I note that you are now planning to ride from Santander. I did the Camino del Norte from there with 3 others in 2005. We cycled all the way on the roads using the CSJ guide for this route. At £5 it is worth every penny. In...
Further to my original posting, this might be of value to other cycling pilgrims.
Two years ago we went on a cycling pilgrimage to Santo Toribio de Liebana in the Picos de Europa. We had a major problem with one of the bikes. It was late on a Saturday afternoon and we expected to be stuck...
Last time that I cycled in northern spain we had a major bike problem. The bottom bracket (main pedal axle) bearings gave out. Fortunately we were near Llanes and found an excellent bike shop (Llanesport) there, who replaced the bearings whilst we waited.
This year we are cycling from Santander...
Hi Petra,
To add to my previous reply to your posting, you wanted to know about traffic. The worst traffic that you will encounter is at the big cities, such as Santander and Gijon. To avoid this take the FEVE trains. The station at Santander is less than 5 minutes walk from the Brittany Ferry...
Hi Petra,
I cycled from Santander in 2005 with 3 others via Camino Norte and flew back to UK from Santiago. I am doing it again in July this year, but cycling both ways. I am a club cyclist so was used to cycling and cycling in traffic. Spain is very hilly so it pays to be cycle fit! We cycled...
