Why so few pilgrims on the Via de la Plata? Article from local website.

I guess that's why it was my favourite of all. Though I found plenty of pilgrims...back in 2013

Easter Sunday 2024 - March 31. What does this mean?

They do not mean 'Easter week', which is the week following Easter Sunday. They mean Holy Week, which is from Palm Sunday to the end of the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week in Spain sees many processions.

Best up to date guide book for Via de la Plata?

Seems unlikely. Alison Raju has been seriously ill for many months.

    Torremejia - one to avoid

I remember it well - ghastly! But all part of the pilgrimage rich tapestry!

    So where do you start?

The Cathedral. You can get a stamp there. I asked after the early morning Mass and they stamped my passport in the sacristy.

    Getting a stamp in Sevilla

Yes. I got mine immediately after the 8am Mass in the Cathedral, when there are very few people around. Just follow the priests to the sacristy as they leave and wave your credencial. They will know what you want.

    How/why is VdlP difficult?

To me it seemed the least arduous of all the Caminos I've walked. There is very little by way of steep climbs (maybe after Lubián). There's a way round doing 40k from Carcaboso to Aldeanueva del Camino (hotels at Vilar de Plasencia will pick you up and drop you back next day at the Arco de...

    Suddenly solo on the VdlP

So sorry about the relationship. My opinion (can't give advice!) is YES - go for it. I walked it as a solo female, and had the time of my life. You will feel empowered, and you will make good friends, and I'd hazard the opinion you'll have a better time than if you were shackled (sorry, strong...

Early September weather on the Via de la Plata?

I started 18 September (2013) from Seville and the temperatures were nudging 40C. It was seriously hot as far as Mérida, where it rained.

Coffee first thing in the morning

I started in September from Seville. In Andalucia cafés open very early for workmen, who work early because of the heat. I often found them open around 5.30/6am. Maybe not in the touristy part of Seville, though.

    Crime along the VDLP?

I walked alone in autumn 2013, and was anxious about the first stage, though there were regular Guardia Civil patrols along the track to Guillena. Later on the Camino I read that the perpetrators had attacked a lone Canadian pilgrim, but that he had managed to get help and the guys were then put...

    Umbrella addict - advice needed!

Absolutely - I had one when walking to Rome.
  17. Harington

    Packed For The Rain ?

    Yes, yes and - yes!
  18. Harington

    Walking alone

I walked alone from Seville. Just take sensible precautions. I did have a dummy wallet with dummy cards and passport, also an alarm and spray. I think that was all a bit excessive! Mind you, I am old enough not to be too tempting to men!

fresh food on the Via de la Plata

    Watermelons! wonderful
