Via del la Plata in early Sept - who else will be there.

I agree that it can get a lot colder from about Salamanca.. In 2015, left Sevilla about September 6, some of the days were very hot. By October 2, around Rionegro del Puente, it was very cold in morning (for a weather wimpy Californian). I bought a cheap watch cap and pair of gloves. That said...

    Wise Pilgrim IOS app

Greetings, It works great for me (iPhone 8 Plus, completely up-to-date). This reminds me that MAYBE when I first installed it months ago, I might have kicked it a few times to get it started: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/app-to-follow-camino.54366/#post-641637 Excerpt: "It...

    Backpack Service

Here is another fairly recent thread on the same topic: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/transport-of-bags-on-via-de-la-plata.51519/ When I was on the VdlP in 2015, I remember a case when a hostel owner arranged for a taxi to carry the pack of an injured pilgrim forward. The...

Via de la Plata or Camino de Madrid

I agree that this part of the VDLP is probably the best. The day from Lubián to A Gudiña was a little bit long but overall it was great. Keep in mind I have not done the Camino Frances yet, but someday I will do the whole thing.

    Swimming on the Via?

If going VdlP onto Camino Sanabrés, a couple of options in Ourense.. https://www.tripadvisor.es/Attraction_Review-g644337-d6157727-Reviews-Piscina_Termal_As_Burgas-Ourense_Province_of_Ourense_Galicia.html http://termalismo.ourense.es/ruta-termal-mino/ ¡Buen Camino!

Starting Via de la Plata 8 September. Anything I should be concerned with?

We left just about the same day as you but a year earlier. It was hot early on. But by October 2 in Mombuey my friend and I both made it a very high priority to get knit caps and gloves for the cold mornings. During a number of stretches there are few or no watering spots. Some days you will...

Etapa A Gudiña -Laza on the Sanabres

When I did the VdlP a year ago, out of approximately 120 walkers encountered, only about 8 Peregrinos and 18 Trailergrinos were not using trekking poles... Some not using them consistently, but virtually everybody who went the whole way had them. No question in my mind.. I am a believer.

Etapa A Gudiña -Laza on the Sanabres

Conditions were pretty perfect when we were there last October 7. You should be fine if you lengthen your poles, hold / use them correctly, and walk deliberately. Image below is looking back up the hill part way through the descent. ¡Buen Camino!

Planning to do Via de la Plata in October

I agree with domigee that the terrain is varied. There are some rocky downhill sections, like coming into Campobecerros where you will be happy to have boots and poles. In general, the terrain becomes more attractive after you pass into Galicia. A friend and I walked the VdlP last September /...

VDLP in October - Too cold?

I started with several friends the first week of September. The general theme was that it started hot and got progressively cooler and wetter as we moved north (and it got later in the season). The one thing I can tell you for sure, is that you will want some gloves and something to keep your...

VDLP in July - Too hot?

The VdlP was my first Camino, and I really enjoyed it. I definitely am not trying to discourage you. However, the reason these two photos were taken was because the content (shade structures and fountains with potable water) were so uncommon.. Buen Camino!

VDLP in July - Too hot?

Yes, it will be hot.. A group of us left Sevilla the first week of September last year.. I had been watching the temperatures along the route in the run up to our trip and fortunately it had cooled down the week before. Make sure you carry plenty of water there are very very few fountains with...

    Disaster! Where to buy shoes/boots?

I don't have firsthand experience with either of these, but I since I know it is easier to search for stuff on a computer with full keyboard from the comfort of home, these seem like two good candidates. The both have a good selection on their websites (Salomon, Merrell, etc.) En Forma...

    Refreshments Via de la plata

I walked the whole VDLP from Sevilla last September/October and saw very very few fountains with potable water. When you get to the albergue in Cañaveral, be sure to explicitly ask about the path to Galisteo. They did not mention a long term closure and a number of people walking on the same day...

LIVE from the Camino (Nearly) Live Updates Via de la Plata February > Abril 2016

I agree.. Do NOT miss it!.. Best Pilgrim's Menu that I had on VDLP in September 2015 (Second place was Casa de Anita in Santa Croya de Tera).

    General advice

I think that the only significant advantage of using PDFs is that some of the Apps are only available in a single language. If you access the source data on a website (using Chrome browser) you can easily do a mechanical translation to most mainstream languages. The space was not really a...

    General advice

Hi @Anemone, Eroski: Here are the instructions for downloading a complete route on Eroski. It seems easiest to do it on a PC first, then transfer it to the phone or tablet. My instructions are based on using Windows 10 and the Chrome Browser (though I originally did it on Windows 7 and it...

    General advice

First, I should say although this is my first post, I benefited greatly from the knowledge shared in this forum. Thanks! Three friends and I (all in the 60 to 72 year-old range) all started the VDLP from Sevilla on September 5, 2015. I think the timing worked out pretty perfectly in terms of...
