    Packing cubes or dry bags

I use dry sacks because they are just that, dry. It rained over 10 days out of 35 on one of my Caminos. I never had to worry about anything being wet.

Best Toe Sock Liners for Hiking: Comparing Injini Coolmax and Nuwool Liners with Smartwool Merino Socks

I wear Injini socks daily. Started using them on my first CF in 2015 and never looked back. Four CFs, total of four blisters which were my fault.

    Question about raintrousers

Rain trousers is a hot button topic on many hiking forums. A really hot topic. I have hiked the CF four times in varying weather conditions, along with many miles on trails in the US. I have never had a problem wearing rain trousers when the temps were above 50*. Would not trade them for a...

Shoes for Camino Portuguese after recovering from ankle injury

In February 2018 I broke my fibula just above the syndesmosis in two places. It took a small bone graft and a plate with four screws to put it back together. I walked the CF this year wearing Hoka One One Kaha Gore-Tex boots and carrying a 12 kilo pack. Fortunately I had ZERO problems, no...

    Question about raintrousers

I’m in the rain trousers camp. Lots of section hiking on the Appalachian Trail, plus three Caminos. Took an Atlas poncho on the first two Caminos in addition to the rain pants. Personal choice but having tried both, I am firmly in the rain pants camp.

    "Toe Socks"

Like you, I learned about, and started using, the toe socks on the AT. I used them on my three previous Camino, and if conditions allow, will use them again in October when I start out on my 4th CF.

Weather? Ski Jacket vs Rain jacket

We all have opinions and mine is leave the ski jacket at home and follow the good advice, above. I ski five days a week during the season (Ski Patrol) and have a collection of ski jackets for all conditions. I have also hiked the Camino Frances three times, once in October - November, when it...

Walking The Meseta in Late October .. what shoes to wear?

I and a walking buddy walked the CF from 2 October to 10 November, 2016. I wore regular light weight hiking books and my hiking buddy (female, 68), wore hiking sandals with wool socks. That was her second CF wearing sandals without a problem.

    Rain issues...Goretex Jacket 670 g vs Rain Jacket 340g

Based on my person experience, I recommend a lighter weight rain jacket in place of a poncho. I took a full length / zip up poncho, and rain jacket and rain paints on my first two Caminos. Ditched the poncho on the third. Fortunately I never experienced the "sauna" inside of rain gear others...

    LinerSocks

Always wear Injinji liners when hiking any distance with a pack.

Weather? Ski Jacket vs Rain jacket

Hi Suzanne, I looked at both the Portuguese and the Norte for this , my third Camino. For several reasons decided on the CF.....lots of alburges and no long distances between them. Hope all is well with you and the rest of our Red Gaggles.

Weather? Ski Jacket vs Rain jacket

Layers. In 2015 I walked started 1 May. Some quite cool mornings but the temperature quickly turned warm during the day. I am a skier also and would not recommend a ski jacket. I am starting 1 May this year and am taking a rain jacket, and lightweight mid and base layers.

    Which sleeping option?

I walked the CF last Year, 4 Oct - 16 Nov. I used a lightweight sleeping bag (40F) and the StS treated liner. Worked very well for me. Two years ago I section hiked the Appalachian Trail and tried using Tyvek as a ground cloth. Did not work for me.

iPad Mini - Yes or No?

Took mine last time, won't go without it this year. And I will be 72 the week after I start in October. For me it was, and will be worth, the small addition of weight. But I tend to carry a heavier pack.

Any one tried the app: Camino Guide Offline

Yes, on my May - June CF last year. Great program.

Calling home with Spanish SIM card ?

I walked the Camino from Roncesvalles to SdC in May -June of this year. I had a Spanish SIM from Orange in my Sony phone. Calling the U.S. from Spain was easy and cheap, and I did it once or twice a day. Thirty nine cents to connect and two cents per minute talk time. Did not text to other...

Ideal Backpack weight, with or without water?

Serious question. For those of you who have been able to keep the pack weight down to 15 or so pounds, what are you carrying? How about a packing list? Try as I might, I cannot come close to 15 pounds. Thanks.

How to get the hang of trekking poles?

I agree. Last summer I hiked about 500 miles, 320 miles on the very rocky northern part of the Appalachian Trail, and another 180 miles on a trail more like the CF. I used two trekking poles every step of the way, without straps. For me, I found trekking poles not only the useful, but...
