    Mine IS bigger than yours...

Awww... just realized. They probably wouldn't let me bring this in my carry-on, and I likely couldn't find it in Galicia. I guess I'll just have to make do ;)

    Mine IS bigger than yours...

It is under the red part. I am well acquainted with it, as before we married people teased us about not forgetting the wine bottle opener. We were married at a camp, in winter, after a two-foot snowfall. We forgot the wine bottle opener. A few people pulled out their Swiss army knives, and we...

7 Clever Packing hacks to make your Camino packing easier

I wouldn't any for a Camino, but I do like how they rolled the jeans - never seen that before. The rest was old news, I'm afraid.

    New Backpack design

This is an amazing concept! I love the flexibility of carrying front or back, but as Imsundaze says, expensive! I would definitely want to try it on before buying -- on sale!

Pack weight - include clothes you're wearing?

Thanks everyone - that gives me a better sense of the thinking behind total weight counts. We're used to travelling light, having gone nearly a month in Costa Rica and in Galicia with a back pack each. The only way to travel in my opinion (although we did get teased a bit when our underwear hung...

Pack weight - include clothes you're wearing?

I've seen a few times that some people include the clothes that they're wearing in their "pack weight". That seems counter-intuitive to me, as I'm always wearing clothes, so always carrying that weight. In fact, it is likely that my Camino clothes will weigh less than my regular clothes. That...

    Packing gear in waterproof bags?

As some others have mentioned, lining your pack with a trash compactor bag is common practice. I first learned of it from thru hikers here (where it has to last six months or more!). The trash compactor bags are thicker and not noisy as regular plastic grocery bags are (and who still has those...

    Shampoo/conditioner

Unfortunately, they are very popular. Every time I try to get some, they're sold out! I'll have to keep trying. I have tried the Lush soap and separate conditioner. They both worked great here, but when I got to Galicia I guess the water is different - my fine baby hair was like straw and...

    Fisan trekking poles??

Got it. Thanks for the quick reply!

10 reasons to use trekking poles

And PLEASE, those videotaping and posting to YouTube - I really, really appreciate your videos. However, there are a couple that I just could not listen to because of the constant clacking, which sometimes drowned out the other sounds (waterfalls, church bells, the narrative...). Rubber tips are...

    Fisan trekking poles??

You have both provided wonderfully detailed information in your posts, but I am left with a query regarding the use of the poles and of the grips in particular. I had understood that poles were used to help distribute body weight as one is walking, so that one's weight is not totally on knees...

What difference does a Smartphone make?

Of course, sometimes nothing will appease people at home when they're worried. There was an earthquake when we were in Costa Rica, and what did my sister do? Called the embassy over and over again, instead of just calling our cell (which we had with us).

What difference does a Smartphone make?

Other things I consider include the pre- and post-Camino, or touring during as we intend to do. My husband had a great app on his phone (don't know the name, but I can check if anyone is interested) that he could view printed material (a shop sign, or instructions) and it would translate the...

    The irreducible minimum

I've been doing a lot of research re: long-distance hiking and walking, and this is the first time someone has pointed out this convenience - brilliant!

    Laundry egg

So happy to hear that this works well, as I just bought one for the same reasons (and for camping and vacationing).

    Laundry egg

If I understood the reviews correctly, there are two types of "beads". One is a black stone, the other is a concentrated soap that eventually is used up and is replaced (hence the packages of replacement beads).

    Laundry egg

I'll have to try this, simply because of troublesome skin issues. That being said, I've checked various online reviews, and they all seem to agree that the EcoEgg is not satisfactory for removing stains or for "sports clothes", so I doubt I would actually try it on the Camino unless I get better...

About to purchase my hiking boots.

Thanks Kanga. I have a thing about wanting whatever I pack to be able to do double duty. Add to that that I need more support than flip flops provide for walking around visiting towns. The only question about sandals for me becomes "closed toe (less ventilation) or open toe?"

About to purchase my hiking boots.

Kanga, did you have a closed-toe sandal? Did you have any issues with small stones getting into your sandals? I've been thinking of bringing walking sandals instead of flip flops, so I have a second option for walking...
