Rain, rain stay away from my stuff...

Re: Re: Rain, rain stay away from my stuff... And we all thank you for that. I have 3 Outdoor Research zip bags that weight next to nothing in which everything fit. Makes is so much easier to pack and unpack too.

Toiletries, some ideas how to reduce their weight

I use the Seanik bar in the square tin box, lined with a paper towel. I doubt using 1 bar every few years will make your hair fall out.

    When did you buy?

Start looking for your gear now so you'll be able to get good deals, try things out and change pour mind if something doesn't work or fit. Getting your pack and gear ready is also part of the Camino. Enjoy!

Most effective way to wash clothes

The problem I have with this method is that you are using hot water for washing clothes when there are wash basins outside for that purpose.

Looking put-together in cities - am I kidding myself?

I would strongly suggest you bring sandals as you will need/want to let your feet breathe at the end of the day. Also, should you get blisters, you want footwear that will limit the risk of more friction. Consider that you may need to wear socks in thoses sandals...I know, I know, you may think...

Toiletries, some ideas how to reduce their weight

It may well be a PR job but the reaction was way over-the-top. It's happened before and people just said they reported it to to mods, end of. The products are still amazing, I've talked about them for 2 years and I am going to buy them and I recommend pilgrims do too

Toiletries, some ideas how to reduce their weight

Have you been through my pack? For body/clothes soap, I'm bringing a Dr Bronner bar. Love the Atomic Toothy Tabs.

Keeping belongings secure on the camino (ipad, camera, phone

You do bring those things with you to the showers. Put everything in a Ziploc bag and put in your shower/grocery/handbag and go everywhere with it. Unless you don't mind, then, take a chance and leave them in your pack.

    a May/June Packing List

Looks good but take out the pillow (bring a cheap satin pillow cover) and the pedometer. Do take a long-sleeved shirt as it gets cold in the mountains and you get chilly when you've walked all day. Trade your Keen Sandals for Crocs...you'll save 400 grams. Add a sarong or a technical fabric...

    fleece weights

Here is a very inexpensive fleece that weights less than 250 grams. I wanted a full zip jacket and not a 1/4 zip. They ship everywhere but it may be more cost efficient to order more than 1 item. http://www.landsend.com/pp/womens-therm ... 10_59.html

now there's a raincoat for the backpack

Hello Kiwifamily, The "arms" are a little bit longer than 3/4 lenght and do taper off so the opening is not that big. One could add a snap to close them further. As for reliability, it worked fine in the incredible downpours I had between SJPP and Orisson and on my 34 km day to Monte de Gozo...

How are the beds in the albergues?

How are the beds in the albergues?

You'll get a mix of everything you mention. If you find yourself in need of a good night sleep and privacy, get a room in a pension or a hotel in the bigger cities. I was just glad to find a bed. Of course, I preferred wood bunk beds or mattresses on the floor...less noisy than the metal bunks.

    My 2013 packing list.

Thank you for finally saying this. Not wearing deo, not washing your clothes and barely showering is all well and good when you're hiking in your tent along the Appalachian Trail but not so nice when sleeping with 30 people in a room. You might think that your sweat doesn't smell but it smells...

another newbie packing list - would love critiques!

I love my packing cube (Outdoor Research football-like bags). It makes it really easy to access everything and to replace in the morning.

another newbie packing list - would love critiques!

For an early spring camino, your list looks really good. You can drop the bag liner since you have packing cells and a poncho in case of rain. There is no need for an emergency light either. A well thought out list, I think; just resist the urge to add things at the last minute. Have fun with...

Looking put-together in cities - am I kidding myself?

Elisabeth, if you are comfortable in a dress, go for it! I'm actually really jealous because dresses do not look good on me. Bring leggings for chilly nights and you'll be set.
