We carry liners and lightweight single fleece "throw" blankets that are very cheap to purchase from variety stores (A$5 at Big W) for the warmer months on the Camino. To pack them down, we use the compression bags from our colder months sleeping bags. They are super lightweight, surprisingly...
My husband only wears sandals and swears by them to stop blisters happening. He walked in snowy conditions this late winter/early spring with neoprene socks and then just his injinji toe socks as it dried up but remained cold. The only thing to be wary of is chestnut season in October/November...
A good hack is buying disposable aluminium oven trays when there is an operational hotplate or oven available. Look out for them in supermarkets like DIA, Lupa, etc. Plastic bags in the vegetable section can steam cook any vegetables. The idea is to utilise, adapt and overcome the lack of...
We live in injinji socks and have been extolling their virtues for running and walking for ages. The thinner versions for running will wear out with long haul walking. You need to go up in thickness and they will easily cope with the workload.
Zip lock bags are our go to for gear seperation and storage in our backpacks. I prefer the double seal ones we have in Oz that close and seal really well. We try and not overpack each bag and it's easy to exclude air by the old "sit & zip" method. 1 bag for sleep gear, 1 bag for evening wear, 1...
On the Norte, Primitive and VdlP I used a staff I purchased/found on the way. I loved the sense of authenticity and the way the staff wore down as I progressed along the way. Now I bring a Kmart hiking pole from Australia that is cheap, light and left behind after reaching SdC. Both give me...
We are a running family and discovered injinji socks eleven years ago as my daughter (then 9 and already a top runner in NSW) and my husband battled toe blisters. We absolutely swear by them and buy bulk when the January sales are online. The low cut ones are great for running but collect gravel...
Pace athletics have lots of good gear for reasonable to very good price but....will they have what you want in the size you need when you HAVE to have it? I utilise Pace Athletics often but online and have it mailed. They are always reliable and with efficient delivery. If you know what you want...
I love walking in 880's and are currently wearing them walking from lisbon to santiago and back to porto via muxia & finisterre. Had ordered hoka one ones but they didnt arrive in time (a long story and a learning experience). The absolute must is a wide enough toe box to take into consideration...
Well, David... the main frame of the trailers is a A$39 collapsible lightweight hand trolley from Bunnings (gotta love that place) where we also sourced the wheels, 10mm bolts that created the axle cross bars with pvc piping cut as spacers and for the adjustable arms..... spiderweb brooms cut...
Hi David, we have been following all your technical advise and were so excited to see your new design of trailer. Your forum threads helped my husband design our 2 trailers and after carrying backpacks all those thousands of kilometres a trailer is AMAZING. No sore shoulders, feet feel so so...
Regarding Decathlon In Zamora, it is very close to the Camino path which makes it super convenient. Also, depending on when you are considering starting the VdlP, it is convenient to update to warmer clothing as you walk into the Sanabres. Decathlon have great cold weather pants that are light...
Nooooo..... I’ll have to wear it all on the plane back to Oz. If you hear about someone expiring of heat exhaustion walking out of Sydney Airport it will only be me. 🤪
Coming from regional NSW we had never experienced Costco. We are currently in Quebec, enjoying Christmas/New Years with Camino buddies from our Frances walk. One of the highlight expeditions was to Costco...... WOW!! I can see how you all get excited over it. Only problem is keeping the other 2...
The first time I unfolded the ikea poncho it was confusing how to get it back in. Then I though "wonder if it's on Youtube?" and yes, there a multiple tutorials on how to refold it properly. How did we ever survive before Youtube? 🤔
I wait till I arrive and buy some small bottles of sparkling mineral water (the cheap supermarket brand ones) as they are more sturdy than the still water type bottles. That way you can start with 2 and ditch one if it isn’t being utilised. Cost effective, convenient and light weight 👍
Would Haribo gummy bears be an adequate replacement for jelly babies? My daughter is addicted to them but only eats them as an energy boost on the long days, and I have seen them for sale everywhere in Spain and Portugal. 🐻 😋
My daughter wears a red and white one that I strengthened the waterproofing along the seams. It stays dry and doesn’t blow about in the wind and is very light to pack. But the best thing is constantly reminding her she looks like a tablecloth, kitchen curtains, a Arabic headdress,,,,,,,,, worth...
After trial and error we recommend the mouldable silicon plugs for comfort and silence. But luckily on the VdlP we are finding ourselves alone in the alburgue so need. Maybe when we get closer to Santiago they’ll get used more.
