    Rumpl blankets?

Yeah, but I love my Woobie. Especially now that they have a zip and can be used as a bag or a blanket. Having said that, I took my snugpack bag which only weighed slightly more than the woobie.

    Mourned for jacket

I had The Pair of Boots I had made in Korea when I deployed there sometime in the last century. They cost me $30, I think, and we’re the most comfortable pair of boots I have ever had. “Jungle boot” style that had hard rugged virbram soles with a nice layer of giving material that provided...

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

Thanks for the step counter heads up. I did not know that.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

Definitely felt that advantage on the downhill! One of the primary motivations for trying them out was for the downhill. I came across lots of accounts of people on the Primitivo and San Salvador struggling on the steep downhill portions.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

I am finding that as well. I have to carry something in my hands or they start swelling around the 12 mile/20k mark while wearing a pack. I did an awful lot of “hiking” in the military but never had an issue with hand swelling. Looking back I realize I was always carrying something. Once out I...

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

That sounds like a whole lot of unfun.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

I am with you there brother. I picked up rubber tips when I bought the poles. I have seen more than one post mentioning the annoying clicking of poles, especially in the mornings, and didn’t want to be “that guy”.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

I think this may be the “secret” to my increased pace. I tend to sway when I walk, the swinging straps on my pack are a dead giveaway. The poles reduced that swaying and I spent more energy going forward rather than side-to-side. Coupled with the push from the poles going uphill I made pretty...

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

I really was not expecting a real increase in speed. I am experimenting with them as the Primitivo has an awful lot of up and down bits, and after reading a number of accounts from other pilgrims who took this route, and thought they would be helpful.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

So after a bit of research and more than one failed attempt using a wooden staff (actually slowed me down) and at my wife’s urging I decided to give trekking poles a chance. I used them a few times on both road and trail for short trial runs. I needed to learn how to use them and not be a danger...

Wimpy Merino Shirts, Or Is It Just Me

Thanks TMcA, I’ll take the last casualty back and get the refund. I am concerned because I bought two separate brands just in case one had didn't work out. Red flags went up when the exact same thing happened to both of them. Trying to figure out what my plan of action will be going forward. Do...

Wimpy Merino Shirts, Or Is It Just Me

TL/DR - merino shirts being shredded by pack. Do you folks wear merino shirts in direct contact with your pack? I have completed two short hikes with a 5 kilo pack I n as many weeks. I wore a new REI Merino wool shirt for the first hike of about 7k. I washed the shirt, most gentle setting/on...

How light is too light? Backpack question

This is spot on. Remember if your Camino takes 30 days it was not a 30 day hike, rather it is 30 one day hikes. Granted 30 one day hikes in a row, but still you don’t need to pack for multiple days in row without access to stores, beds, food, etc.

Must Check My Ruck for Flight

It looks like I’ll be flying Iberia/BA, all the budget airlines cost about the same, and most were longer flights. Good to hear folks have been able to get the Kestrel 48 onboard as a carry on. I’ll probably carry it on, but pack a fold away backpack cover duffel that I can use if I am required...

    That is really very nice.

Must Check My Ruck for Flight

Thanks davebugg & Camino Chrissy, but the internal frame is the problem. Even empty it’s just a wee bit to long. I could probably get away with it as carry on 8 out of 10 times. I just don’t want to take that chance without a bit of flex in the start date for the Camino. really just venting.

Must Check My Ruck for Flight

A bit of a rant. Measured my ruck/backpack and it is about an inch too long to take onboard as a carry on. I really like my Osprey Kestrel men’s 48, which I bought with the internet of using it on the Camino Primitivo. I’ve had it for about a year and it is the best backpack I have used...
