    Lightweight Camino - Forum Input

Consider more socks , there are days when you will want to change them two or three times . You can rinse them out and dry them on the outside of your pack as you walk . I took a power bank , never had to use it .

Long pants and long sleeves in summer? Smart or big mistake?

A disturbing sight ; one I will never forget , is that of the calves of two young Norwegian pilgrims I tended to along the way . Not what you may think though ! I could describe them both as ' fairer than fair ' and totally unaware of the strength of Spanish UV ( fortunately this didnt happen...

    New backpack strange.

The weight of the pack itself is the immediate question . Two frames , a sliding mechanism , a suspension device and some type of resile elastic must add weight not found in other light weight packs . This would seem to be a case of attempting to make a back pack seem to weigh less when it's...

Rain Pants/DIY- Rain Kilt /Skirt made from a big black plastic bag- Cheap and Light

Walking in a plastic bag , no matter how cold it is , will only get you wetter inside it than outside .

Trekking poles: Folding vs. Telescoping - Which one is the better option?

Twist locks can be maddening , loose one moment and impossibly tight the next , even after adjustment . I use Black Diamond lever lock , telescoping alloy poles for rough bush walks . They never jam or slip and can be fine tuned easily without tools , well worth the small extra expense over...

Black stuff on my Z-poles again

Perhaps unlikely though there is a possibility the ' Black stuff ' is dried sooty mold . This is the same species that happily invades the silicon sealant in bathroom shower stalls and creates the unsightly black streaking . The flexible ' tendons ' of the Z poles are silicon sheathed . It...

    Bottle vs Bladder

I made the adaptation for a number of reasons . I find bottles far preferable on the Camino , the amount of water I drank was surprising and digging out the bladder to refill each time would become tedious . Water availability is not usually a problem so two small 750ml bottles seems to last...

    Bottle vs Bladder

Oh dear . Here I go reinventing the wheel , again !

    Bottle vs Bladder

When bushwalking I use a bladder , while trekking a bottle . Both have advantages and disadvantages so I decided to combine both . A bottle with a bite valve , easily made in a few moments using rubber bands a bite valve from a punctured bladder I had and a generic disposable water bottle ...

Trouble with my Black Diamond Z-poles - again

Thank you Doug , I did suspect as much after further thought . As long as the cords don't fray on the ferrule edges they may last longer than I first feared .

Trouble with my Black Diamond Z-poles - again

This discussion prompted me to inspect my own Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ poles . Purchased in 2019 for the Via Francigena at almost $300. Australian . To my horror I found this damage to the silicon connectors at the joints . Despite being stored in a dry moderate climate atmosphere they have...

Trouble with my Black Diamond Z-poles - again

Nothing to worry about , wipe off as much as you can , use a drop or two of baby oil on a rag to help remove it . Dry and then apply the dry lubricant . My personal preference is talc however you must wipe it off and reapply if the poles get really wet .

Trouble with my Black Diamond Z-poles - again

Dry lubrication is a good idea . Bee's wax does tend to be sticky though , it will allow the joints to slip but will eventually attract sand and grit and the trouble will return , a styrene wax candle is a lot drier , cheap birthday candles are best . A dry powder lubricant is a lot more...

    Merino wool gloves question

You can easily make your favoutite gloves touch screen friendly . On all fingers or just the indexes if you want . It only takes a few moments with a needlr and ' Conductive thread ' available on line just about anywhere . Sew a few stiches through the chosen tip making sure the thread can make...

    My ultimate packing list

One really useful purpose of a light day pack is to carry clothes and valuables into bathrooms . This way the most essential and vital objects are right with you and never unattended . The added advantage is that your fresh clothes are protected from spray and ready to wear once you are finished .

    My ultimate packing list

One invaluable thing I added to my phone was a battery saving application . It literally tripled the battery capacity of my Android phone . Three days on standby was the least capacity I achieved . There are huge parasitic drains on phones especially from Face Book . Apple phones' battery...

    My ultimate packing list

You have inspired me to reduce weight! I carried a power pack , only a small one good for one charge of my phone , never once used it . Instead invest in a really long ; plus one metre usb cable so you can lie in bed and use the phone while it charges . One addition I would make is an extra...

As I pack for my Camino- I wanted to share my cutting board

A really nice idea , something I would do as well . It hurts though when after carrying an object of sentimental value throughout your journeys across the world to have it confiscated at the final hurdle . Sometimes even worse to know it will be incinerated .

As I pack for my Camino- I wanted to share my cutting board

Unfortunately ' Treated ' is defined by kiln drying and / or infusion with insecticide .

As I pack for my Camino- I wanted to share my cutting board

Marvellous and something to be treasured. Australians may not be able to carry such a beautiful accessory , at least not back to home . Any untreated wooden artefact is usually confiscated by border control upon return even though it originated in Australia . I wouldn't like to lose a...
