whatever you buy, get a half size larger than your usual foot size, to allow for swelling as you hike these long distances. It makes a difference. I also recommend running shoes, not hiking shoes. You are mostly walking on flat ground, not hiking over rough terraine. Makes a difference. As for...
I don’t have experience with either, but have you gone to a good outdoors store to be “ fitted”? This is what i did, and it worked for me ( small back also).
Addendum to the above: and in those driving rainstorms, i wore baggies on each foot over my socks, and that kept my feet dry ( until, when arriving in Santiago in a pouring raging rainstorm, i stepped into a deep puddle)
I brought only two of those cheap, clear, compact plastic bag-like things, sometimes sold as an “ emergency raincoat”. Basically, it is a poncho that goes over your head and has a hood. It wont keep you warm, but it will keep you dry. The advantage being that it is loose enough to fit right over...
Oh, and don’t bring heavy rain gear, instead buy a couple of those emergency raincoats which are actually just large clear plastic bags with armholes and a hood. It is very light and small. It will fit over you and your backpack. I stayed dry in a pouring rainstorm all the way into santiago in...
Yes, pack a small jar of Vaseline for your feet. Bring 4 pair of socks, not two, bring two lightweight towels, not one, and not terry cloth...spend the money to buy a backpacking shami-type towel. I purchased two and they were costly and I grumbled about the cost, but ooooh, was I ever happy...
Been hiking all my life and had trouble with my feet...until I got advice from this forum and walked the Camino, pretty much with painless feet. The advice? Buy walking shoes, not hiking boots. Buy 1/2 size larger than normal. Buy wide width if available. The forum also suggested I try Solomon...
The liner was fine for most of September. If it gets cool you can ask for a blanket. Bedbugs often go for exposed flesh. My bites were on an arm that was outside of the sleep sack. You can inspect for bedbugs at any accommodation. Even in the US i always check for evidence of these before I use...
In sept-oct 2018 I walked the CF with only a silk liner. I was fine in Sept. it got a little cooler in Oct so I slept with my nylon jacket on. I was fine with that. As for bedbugs, you either get them or you don’t . I encountered them in my first week, but only once during the entire 6 weeks of...
Here is what kept my pack and me dry on my last day, which was torrential rain: 1/ everything in my pack is inside a ziplock bag...like cheap little packing cubes, these also keep everything organized. 2/ pack a couple of those cheap, see thru rain ponchos you buy for a dollar, 3/ put large...
Hello from a size 14 who is 2 inches shorter than you! Ihave found the hiking pants at eastern mountain sports to be roomy, they have pockets, fit well, but in drab colors and a bit heavy for packing, thats all i got to offer. Where do you depart and on what day?
Wow, i am so relieved to hear this. I must be one of the other 3! I have been having difficulty trying to decide if i should buy one just for this trip, and recently decided not to bother. I do have an ipad. Thanks for helping me decide...besides, we have herd immunity...in a pinch i will bet...
Believe it or not, i “cured” my plantar fasciatis by taking large doses of vitamin b12...cannot recall where i got that tip, but it worked and i dont think it will hurt you to try it.
