I have exactly the same problem with wide feet in the toe area but slim everywhere else. After searching and buying Brooks Cascadia trail shoes, I found that after 15km or so, they were putting pressure on the side of my big toes where the foot is widest. Annakappa is right - do not underestimate how cold it can be. Like many things, how sensitive you are to the cold is very personal.
